Sing Before the Victory

07/17/2026

Some mornings it’s easy to praise God. Life is going well, prayers seem to be getting answered, and hope comes naturally. Other mornings are different. The circumstances haven’t changed. The struggle is still there. The diagnosis is still real. The relationship is still strained. The bills are still waiting. Those are the moments when praise becomes more than a song—it becomes a declaration of faith.

“But I will sing of your strength; I will sing aloud of your steadfast love in the morning. For you have been to me a fortress and a refuge in the day of my distress.” - Psalm 59:16 (ESV)

David wrote these words while his life was in danger. If you go back to the heading of Psalm 59, you’ll find that Saul had sent men to watch David’s house so they could kill him. David wasn’t writing from a palace. He wasn’t looking back after everything had worked out. He was writing while the threat was still outside his door.

That changes how we read this verse.

Notice that David doesn’t say, “I will sing when You rescue me.” He says, “I will sing of your strength.” His confidence isn’t rooted in changing circumstances but in the unchanging character of God.

Then he says, “I will sing aloud of your steadfast love in the morning.” Morning represents a new beginning. David expected to wake up because he trusted the God who watches over His people. Before he knew what the new day would bring, he had already decided what his response would be. He would praise.

I think that’s a decision every believer has to make. We can wake up and let the headlines, our calendar, or our emotions set the tone for the day. Or we can begin by reminding ourselves who God is. His strength hasn’t weakened overnight. His love hasn’t run out. His faithfulness didn’t expire while we slept.

David also looked backward before he looked forward. He remembered that God had already been “a fortress and a refuge in the day of my distress.” That’s often where our faith is strengthened. We remember the prayers God has answered, the doors He has opened, the comfort He has given, and the times He carried us when we didn’t think we could take another step.

Looking back at God’s faithfulness gives us confidence to trust Him with today’s uncertainty.

Praise isn’t pretending everything is fine. It’s declaring that God is still good even when everything isn’t fine. It’s choosing to worship the One who has never failed, even while you’re waiting for Him to move again.

Maybe today you need to sing before the victory comes. Not because the battle is over, but because you know who is fighting with you.

Action Steps

* Begin your day by thanking God for three specific ways He has been faithful in your life.
* When anxiety starts to rise today, stop and remind yourself that God is your fortress and refuge.
* Put on a worship song this morning and let your praise focus on God’s character instead of your circumstances.

Challenge for the Day

Before you check the news, your email, or social media tomorrow morning, spend five minutes thanking God for His strength and steadfast love. Let praise become the first voice you hear.

Prayer

Father, thank You for being my strength when I feel weak and my refuge when life feels overwhelming. Help me to remember Your faithfulness and to praise You even before I see the answer. Let my confidence rest in who You are, not in what I can see. May my mornings begin with worship and my heart remain anchored in Your steadfast love. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
