Be Strong and Courageous
03/03/2026
“Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.”
— Joshua 1:9 (NIV)
Joshua stood on the edge of a promise that felt bigger than his capacity. Have you ever felt the weight of something like that?
Moses was gone. The wilderness season was over. The only thing left for him to do was to take a step of faith. The Jordan River stood in front of him, and the Promised Land, occupied, fortified, intimidating, was on the other side. Leadership had just shifted. Expectations were high. And all eyes were on him.
And in that moment, God did not give Joshua a strategy, He gave him a command.
“Be strong and courageous.”
God didn’t say it just once. Not even twice. But three times in the opening chapter. Be strong and courageous.
Why?
Because courage is not the absence of fear. It is obedience in the presence of it.
There have been seasons in my own life, when stepping into something new felt just like I was standing at the riverbank. A new ministry, a hard conversation, a vision that required faith long before the finances were there. On the outside, people assume confidence. On the inside, there’s that quiet whisper: What if I’m not enough?
Joshua could have said the same thing.
But God anchored Joshua’s courage in a promise: “The Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.”
That is the difference-maker.
Your courage is not rooted in your competence.
It is rooted in His presence.
Did you notice what God does not say. He does not promise ease. He does not promise immediate victory. He simply promises Himself.
And that my friends is enough.
Some of us are standing at our own Jordan right now. A medical report. A family situation. A leadership decision. A ministry expansion. The temptation is to wait until fear disappears.
But courage is not a feeling you wait for. It is a command you step into.
Joshua had to put his foot in the water before he saw it part.
Today, the same God who spoke to Joshua speaks to you. The same presence that crossed rivers and toppled walls walks with you into meetings, hospital rooms, classrooms, and conversations.
You are not alone. God is saying to you….
Be strong.
Be courageous.
Do not be afraid.
Do not be discouraged.
Because wherever you go today, He goes with you.
Action Steps:
• Identify the “Jordan River” in front of you. Name it specifically.
• Replace the question “What if I fail?” with “What if God shows up?”
• Pray Joshua 1:9 out loud before stepping into something that feels intimidating.
• Take one small act of obedience instead of waiting for perfect confidence.
Today’s Challenge:
Do one thing you’ve been postponing because of fear and do it trusting His presence, not your strength.
Prayer:
Father, You know the places where I feel small. You know the responsibilities that feel heavy and the unknowns that stir anxiety in my heart. Today, I choose to trust Your command. Help me be strong and courageous, not because I feel fearless, but because You are faithful. Remind me that You are with me wherever I go. When fear whispers, let Your promise speak louder. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
