Before Everything Else

03/13/2026

There are moments in life when everything feels like it is starting over.

A new season. A new challenge. A new responsibility. Sometimes those beginnings are exciting. Other times they are uncertain. The truth is, most of us like beginnings when we feel prepared for them. We struggle with them when we don’t.

“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” Genesis 1:1 (NIV)

Everything begins here.

Before there was light, before there was land, before there was order, beauty, color, rhythm, and life, there was God. This verse, the first line of the Bible, does not begin by explaining God, defending Him, or introducing Him. It simply declares Him. “In the beginning God…”

Before there were oceans, mountains, trees, or stars filling the sky, there was simply God. The Bible does not begin with chaos winning or darkness dominating. It begins with God stepping into nothingness and creating something magnificent.

This fact matters more than we sometimes realize. When life feels uncertain, we often begin in the wrong place. We begin with the problem. We begin with the diagnosis. We begin with the fear. We begin with the bank account, the broken relationship, the closed door, the long night, or the bad report. But Scripture teaches us to begin somewhere else. Begin with God.

“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.”

That single sentence reminds us of a powerful truth: God is the author of beginnings.

There is something deeply grounding about that truth. The God who stood at the beginning of all creation is still standing at the beginning of whatever you are facing today. He is not scrambling. He is not confused. He is not reacting. He is the Creator, the Author, the One who speaks into chaos and brings order, purpose, and life.

I remember standing on an empty piece of land when we began building our house. There was nothing there but dirt, stakes, and a vision. If someone had driven by that day, they might have thought nothing significant was happening. But the plans had already been drawn. The work had already begun. What looked empty was actually the beginning of something intentional.

God works the same way in our lives.

Sometimes we stand in what feels like an empty field. A season where we cannot yet see what God is building. We see the dirt, the uncertainty, the unfinished places. But God sees the full design. He is not guessing about your future. He is creating it with purpose.

Genesis reminds us that when God begins something, He does it with intention. Light appears where there was darkness. Order emerges where there was chaos. Beauty rises where there was nothing.

And the same Creator who formed the heavens and the earth is still working today. He is still creating new beginnings in hearts, families, ministries, and lives.

Maybe today you feel like you are standing at the edge of something new. A new responsibility. A new challenge. A new chapter that feels both exciting and intimidating. This verse reminds us that the God who began the universe is more than capable of guiding the next step of your life.

You do not have to have the entire blueprint. You simply have to trust the One who does.

Today, take a moment to acknowledge God as the author of your story. When something feels uncertain, pause and remember that God specializes in beginnings. Write down one area of your life that feels unfinished or unclear and intentionally pray over it, trusting that God is still at work even when you cannot yet see the finished picture.

Today’s challenge:
When you face something new or uncertain, remind yourself, “The God who created the beginning is guiding this moment too.”

Lord, thank You for being the God of every beginning. When I step into seasons that feel uncertain, help me trust that You are already there. Give me faith to believe that You are building something good even when I cannot yet see the finished work. Lead me today and remind me that my story is always safest in Your hands. In Jesus’ name, amen.
