Peace in the Middle of the Storm
04/02/2026
There are moments when life feels steady… predictable… even calm. And then, without warning, something shifts. A phone call. A diagnosis. A conversation that doesn’t go the way you expected. Suddenly, what felt secure begins to shake.
In those moments, we don’t need clichés, we need something solid to hold onto. Something stronger than the storm we’re standing in.
“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” — John 16:33 (NIV)
Jesus delivers this verse with such powerful honesty. He doesn’t sugarcoat life. He doesn’t promise an easy road or a trouble-free existence. In fact, He guarantees the opposite: “In this world you will have trouble.”
That’s not always the verse people want to highlight. But it’s the truth we all eventually experience.
I remember sitting across from a client one time, not just talking numbers, but talking life. The markets had been volatile, but that wasn’t what was weighing on him. I could really tell something was troubling him. I asked, as we normally do, is there something we can pray for you about? His voice cracked as he shared about a diagnosis his wife had just received. In that moment, spreadsheets didn’t matter. Strategies didn’t matter. What mattered was the reality that trouble had come knocking, and it wasn’t leaving quickly.
You see, we all face those moments. The unexpected diagnosis. The strained relationship. The financial pressure. The silent battles no one else sees.
And Jesus doesn’t deny those realities. But He does something even more powerful, He redirects our focus.
“In me you may have peace.”
Wow!
Not in circumstances.
Not in outcomes.
Not in control.
But In Him.
This is one of those mind-blowing parts. The peace Jesus offers isn’t the absence of trouble, it’s the presence of Himself in the middle of it.
Think about that. The same Jesus who spoke these words would soon face betrayal, suffering, and the cross. Yet He speaks of peace because He knows something the disciples don’t fully understand yet, He has already secured the victory.
“Take heart! I have overcome the world.”
That phrase, take heart, means to be courageous, to stand firm, to not lose hope. Why? Because the outcome has already been decided. The storm may rage, but it does not get the final word.
It’s like watching a game you recorded and you already know your team wins in the end. The pressure is still real. The hits still come. But there’s a confidence underneath it all because the victory is secure.
That’s what Jesus is offering you today.
Not a life without trouble, but a heart anchored in victory.
So whatever you’re facing right now, don’t measure your peace by your situation. Measure it by your Savior.
Because He didn’t just face the world……He overcame it.
Take heart.
• Pause today and identify what “trouble” is currently weighing on you. Name it specifically.
• Shift your focus by reminding yourself: “My peace is in Christ, not in this situation.”
• Spend a few quiet minutes inviting Jesus into that exact area, don’t try to fix it, just sit with Him in it.
• Speak truth over your situation: “Jesus, You have already overcome this.”
Today, when anxiety tries to rise, choose to take heart instead of giving in to fear.
Jesus, thank You for Your honesty and Your promise. You never said life would be easy, but You promised that You would be with me. Help me to find my peace in You, not in my circumstances. When trouble comes, remind me that You have already overcome the world. Give me courage to stand firm and a heart that rests in Your victory. Amen.
