Charm Fades, But Reverence Remains
03/10/2026
“Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.”
— Proverbs 31:30 (NIV)
There is something about our culture that constantly tries to convince us that appearance is everything. Advertisements promise confidence through cosmetics. Social media rewards carefully filtered images. Entire industries are built around the pursuit of looking younger, stronger, or more impressive than we really are.
Yet Scripture quietly pulls the curtain back on that illusion.
“Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting…”
The writer of Proverbs is not condemning beauty. God created beauty. He created the mountains, the oceans, the stars, and every human being in His image. But the warning here is about what we build our identity on. Charm can be manufactured. Beauty changes with time. Neither one has the power to sustain a life.
What endures is something deeper: a heart that reveres God.
The phrase “fears the Lord” does not mean living in terror of God. It means living in reverent awe, recognizing that He is the center of life. It means ordering our decisions, priorities, and attitudes around His presence.
I have seen this kind of beauty many times in ministry.
I have watched women sit beside hospital beds, holding the hand of someone they love, whispering prayers when words were hard to find. I have seen mothers quietly serve their families without applause. I have seen widows who, after decades of marriage, still show up at church every week with a steady faith that has been refined through loss and life.
None of those moments make magazine covers.
But heaven notices every one of them.
And if I can say this personally, I have watched this verse lived out right in my own home. Caryn’s response to various trials has never been one of panic or fear. It has been steady faith. Prayer. Trust. Quiet strength. The loss of my parents, our daughter’s miscarriage, and most recently my diagnosis. She stood firm through all of it.
That is the kind of beauty Proverbs is talking about.
Not a beauty that fades with time, but one that deepens with faithfulness.
Because a life centered on God grows more radiant with every passing year.
The world may celebrate charm and appearance, but Scripture celebrates something far more powerful: a life that honors the Lord.
And that kind of life is always worthy of praise.
Action Steps
• Take a moment today to thank God for the people in your life whose faith has quietly shaped you.
• Ask the Lord to cultivate in you a deeper reverence for Him in your daily decisions.
• Speak encouragement to someone today whose faithfulness often goes unnoticed.
Challenge for the Day
Instead of focusing on outward appearance or achievement today, focus on one question:
Does my life reflect a heart that reveres the Lord?
Prayer
Father, thank You for reminding us that what truly lasts is not charm or outward beauty, but a heart devoted to You. Shape our character so that our lives reflect Your presence. Help us pursue the kind of beauty that grows out of faith, humility, and reverence for You. May our lives bring honor to Your name and encouragement to those around us. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
