Clothed in Christ

07/15/26

There are some things we choose to wear because they identify us. A uniform tells you someone’s profession. A wedding ring tells you someone has made a covenant. A favorite team jersey tells you where their loyalty lies. Paul uses that same picture in today’s passage. As followers of Christ, there are qualities we are called to “put on.” They don’t save us, but they reveal the One who has.

“Put on then, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience,”
- Colossians 3:12 (ESV)

This verse becomes even richer when we remember what Paul has just written. In the verses before this, he tells believers to put off the old life, anger, malice, slander, lying, and the sinful habits that once controlled us (Colossians 3:5-11). Then he changes the picture. The Christian life isn’t simply about taking something off. It’s also about putting something on.

Notice where Paul begins. Before he ever tells us what to wear, he reminds us who we are. God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved. That’s important. We don’t become loved because we’re compassionate. We become compassionate because we are already loved. We don’t earn God’s acceptance by being humble. We practice humility because we’ve already been accepted through Christ.

That changes everything.

Most people can fake kindness for a few minutes. We can smile when we don’t feel like it. We can hold our tongue for a while. But the qualities Paul lists aren’t meant to be occasional acts; they’re meant to become our character. They are the fruit of a heart that is being shaped by Jesus.

Compassion notices the hurting.

Kindness chooses to help instead of criticize.

Humility isn’t thinking less of yourself; it’s thinking of yourself less.

Meekness is strength that has been surrendered to God’s control.

Patience gives people room to grow because God has been patient with us.

If we’re honest, there are days when one or two of those qualities come naturally, and other days when none of them seem to fit. Maybe someone cuts you off in traffic. A coworker says something unfair. A family member pushes every button you have. In those moments, our old nature reaches for the old clothes hanging in the closet. Paul says, “Don’t wear those anymore.”

Instead, choose the wardrobe Christ has given you.

That doesn’t happen by accident. Every morning we decide whether we’ll allow our emotions to dress us or whether we’ll allow the Holy Spirit to clothe us with the character of Christ.

Imagine how different our homes would be if compassion greeted everyone at the breakfast table. How different our workplaces would be if humility mattered more than being right. How different our churches would be if patience replaced criticism.

The world notices when Christians speak about Jesus. But it pays even closer attention to whether we look like Him.

So before you walk out the door today, ask yourself one simple question: What am I wearing?

Not physically.

Spiritually.

Action Steps

* Ask the Holy Spirit which one of these five qualities, compassion, kindness, humility, meekness, or patience, He wants to grow in you today.
* Before reacting to a difficult person or situation, pause long enough to ask, “What would wearing Christ look like right now?”
* Thank God that your identity is found in being His beloved child, not in your performance.

Challenge for the Day

Intentionally practice one of the qualities listed in Colossians 3:12 toward someone who may not expect it. Let your actions point them to Christ.

Prayer

Father, thank You that I am loved because of what Jesus has done, not because of what I have accomplished. Help me live out that identity today. Clothe me with compassion, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience. When my old nature wants to take over, remind me that You have given me something far better to wear. Let the people around me see more of Jesus in me today. In His name, Amen.
