Strength for Every Season

“I can do all this through him who gives me strength.”
Philippians 4:13 (NIV)
The apostle Paul wrote these words not from a place of comfort, but from a prison cell. Chained. Restricted. Watched. Yet full of joy. When we read, “I can do all this through him who gives me strength,” we often hear it as a motivational slogan. But Paul wasn’t talking about winning a race or closing a deal. He was talking about contentment.
Just a few verses earlier, he says he has learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. That is the “all this.” It’s not about achieving anything we set our minds to. It’s about enduring, persevering, thriving spiritually no matter the circumstance.
I remember walking with a family in our church who faced back-to-back hardships, financial issues, health issues, and relational strain. They told me something that stuck: “Pastor, we wouldn’t choose this, but we are seeing God in ways we never would have otherwise.” That’s Philippians 4:13 lived out. Not flashy faith. Steady faith. The kind that says, “Lord, I don’t have what it takes, but You do.”
Strength in Christ doesn’t always remove the mountain. Sometimes it steadies your footing while you climb it. Sometimes it simply helps you take the next faithful step.
This verse invites us into dependence. It reminds us that our sufficiency is not in our skill set, our network, our resources, or our resilience. It is in Him. When the paycheck is strong, He gives strength. When the account is empty, He gives strength. When the diagnosis is good, He gives strength. When the report is hard, He gives strength.
The world says, “Dig deep.”
Jesus says, “Come to Me.”
There is a difference.
Quick action steps for today:
• Identify one area where you are feeling stretched or weak.
• Instead of strategizing first, pray first.
• Speak Philippians 4:13 out loud over that situation.
• Take one obedient step forward, trusting His strength—not your own.
Challenge for the day:
When you feel inadequate, don’t default to self-reliance. Pause and consciously lean into Christ. Let His strength be your story today.
Prayer:
Father, thank You that my strength is not limited to my own capacity. When I feel overwhelmed, remind me that You are not. Teach me the secret of contentment. Help me to trust You in seasons of abundance and in seasons of need. I choose today to rely on the strength You provide. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
