The Strong Tower

01/21/2026

“The name of the Lord is a fortified tower; the righteous run to it and are safe.”
— Proverbs 18:10 (NIV)

In ancient times, a strong tower wasn’t decorative, it was essential. When danger came, people didn’t debate where to go; they ran. The tower was high, secure, and proven. It had protected generations before them. Solomon taps into that imagery and reminds us that God’s name, His character, His nature, His faithfulness, is that kind of refuge.

Notice what the verse doesn’t say. It doesn’t say the righteous walk to it casually, or visit it occasionally. They run. Running implies urgency, dependence, and trust. When fear rises, when uncertainty presses in, when life feels exposed, the righteous instinct is not self-reliance but God-reliance.

We often build our own “towers.” Financial security. Control. Approval. Productivity. Even ministry success. None of those are evil, but none of them are fortified. They crack under pressure. They fail in storms they were never designed to withstand. Only the name of the Lord, who He is, not just what He does—can hold the weight of our fears and the force of life’s battles.

Think about a child startled by a loud noise. They don’t analyze the situation, they run to someone they trust. That’s the heart posture of this proverb. God is not merely a last resort; He is our first refuge. Safety isn’t found in the absence of trouble but in the presence of the Lord.

The tower is already standing. The invitation is already given. The question is whether we will run to Him, or try to stand exposed on our own.

Today’s action steps:
• Identify where you tend to run first when stress or fear hits.
• Speak the name of the Lord aloud in prayer today—Jehovah Jireh, Jehovah Shalom, your Provider and Peace.
• Choose one moment today to pause and intentionally “run” to God instead of reacting in your own strength.

Today’s challenge:
The next time anxiety rises, don’t manage it, run from it. Run to the Lord and rest in His protection.

Prayer:
Lord, You are my strong tower. Forgive me for the times I’ve trusted my own strength, my plans, or my control more than Your name. Teach my heart to run to You quickly and confidently. When fear comes, remind me that I am safe in You. I trust You today as my refuge, my defender, and my peace. Amen.
