When Fear Knocks

03/21/2026

Fear has a way of showing up uninvited.

Sometimes it comes in the middle of the night when the house is quiet but your mind is loud. Sometimes it shows up in a phone call from the doctor, a difficult conversation you know you need to have, a financial pressure you did not see coming, or a burden you carry for someone you love. Fear does not need a large opening. It just needs a moment of vulnerability.

But the Word of God says:

“When I am afraid, I put my trust in you.” Psalm 56:3 NIV

What I love about this verse is its honesty. David does not say, “If I am afraid.” He says, “When I am afraid.” That matters. It reminds us that fear itself is not failure. Even strong believers have moments when their hearts shake. Even people of deep faith can feel overwhelmed. The issue is not whether fear will try to enter. The issue is where we turn when it does.

David says, “I put my trust in you.” That is a deliberate choice. Fear may be a feeling, but trust is a decision. David is teaching us that the presence of fear does not cancel the possibility of faith. In fact, some of the purest faith is found in those moments when everything in you feels uncertain, but you still choose to lean on God.

I have seen that kind of trust up close. In November of 2023, I was diagnosed with Chronic Lymphatic Leukemia (CLL). In that moment, when the first wave of news hit my heart with the word Leukemia, my mind started racing ahead of my theology. I began thinking about outcomes, implications, and all the what-ifs. Fear started trying to write a story before God had even finished the sentence. But then there is that sacred moment when I stopped, breathed, and remember who is still on the throne. God had not changed. His character had not shifted. His promises did not weaken. His presence had not left. He was still Jehovah Rapha, the God who heals.

Trust does not always remove fear instantly. Sometimes trust looks like taking the next step while your knees still feel weak. Sometimes trust looks like praying when you do not yet have answers. Sometimes trust looks like worshiping while the battle is still in front of you. It is not pretending everything is fine. It is declaring that even if everything is not fine, God is still faithful.

Today’s verse was written in a season of pressure, not comfort. David was surrounded by enemies and walking through real danger. Yet in the middle of that, he anchored himself in the Lord. That is the invitation for us too. Not to deny fear, not to be ruled by fear, but to bring fear into the presence of God and let trust rise higher.

Today, whatever is pressing on your heart, name it honestly before the Lord. Do not dress it up. Do not minimize it. But do not magnify it above God either. Fear may be real, but it is not ultimate. God is.

Take that fear and place it where it belongs, into the hands of the One who has never failed you.

Write down the thing that is causing you fear today.

Pray specifically over that fear instead of just thinking about it.

Replace one fearful thought with one truth from God’s Word.

Thank God in advance for being with you, even before the outcome changes.

Today’s challenge:
Each time fear rises today, stop and say out loud, “When I am afraid, I put my trust in You.”

Lord, You know every place where fear tries to settle into my heart. You see the worries I speak and the ones I keep hidden. Thank You that I do not have to face any of it alone. When fear rises, teach me to trust You quickly. Help me to remember that You are near, You are good, and You are faithful. Strengthen my heart today. Quiet my mind. Steady my steps. Let my faith be greater than my fear because my eyes are fixed on You. In Jesus’ name, amen.
