There Is Still a Rest for You
03/20/2026
We live in a world that celebrates exhaustion. Busy is often worn like a badge of honor. Full calendars, constant notifications, endless responsibilities, and the pressure to keep producing can make a person feel like rest is a luxury instead of a necessity. But today’s verse reminds us that rest is not merely a break in the schedule. It is part of the promise of God.
“There remains, then, a Sabbath-rest for the people of God.” — Hebrews 4:9 (NIV)
There is something deeply comforting in that word remains. It means God’s rest has not run out. It has not expired. It has not been reserved only for people in easier seasons, quieter lives, or less complicated circumstances. It remains. It is still available. It is still open. It is still God’s invitation to His people.
This verse points beyond a nap, a vacation, or a day off. Those things can help the body, but this kind of rest reaches deeper. It is the rest of knowing that God is God and you are not. It is the rest of trusting that His grace is enough, His timing is right, and His strength will sustain you. It is the kind of rest that settles the soul even when life is still moving all around you.
I think about seasons when life feels like one long list of things that need attention. Ministry needs. Family needs. Financial decisions. Messages to prepare. People to care for. Phone calls to return. Burdens that are not even your own, yet you carry them because you love people. In those moments, fatigue is not just physical. It is spiritual and emotional too. You can sit down in a chair and still feel no rest at all.
That is why this verse matters so much. God is not simply telling us to stop moving. He is inviting us to come back to Him. True rest is found in His presence. The kind of rest Hebrews speaks of is not earned by finishing everything on your list. It is received by faith. It is what happens when you stop trying to hold the whole world together and remember that Jesus already holds it in His hands.
It is like a child who falls asleep in the car after a long day. The child is not worried about the route, the traffic, or whether they will get home safely. Why? Because someone trustworthy is driving. That is the picture of the believer’s heart with God. Rest begins when trust deepens. Peace grows when surrender does.
Some people hear the word rest and think it sounds passive or unproductive. But biblical rest is not laziness. It is confidence. It is refusing to live as though everything depends on you. It is choosing to believe that God works even when you are still. It is laying down the weight of self-reliance and picking up the peace of dependence on Him.
Maybe today your body is tired. Maybe your mind is overloaded. Maybe your heart is carrying burdens you have not said out loud to anyone. Hebrews 4:9 is a reminder that God sees all of that and still says, “There remains.” There remains rest for the anxious. Rest for the weary. Rest for the overworked. Rest for the grieving. Rest for the person who has been strong for everybody else. Rest for the people of God.
And that rest is ultimately found in Jesus. He is our Sabbath fulfillment. He is our peace. He is our refuge. He is the One who does not just give rest but is rest to the soul that trusts Him.
So today, do not just push harder. Pause. Breathe. Pray. Release what you cannot control. Let your soul settle again in the faithfulness of God. There is still a rest for you.
Pause for a few minutes today and sit quietly before the Lord.
Name the things that have been weighing on your heart and surrender them to Him in prayer.
Choose one part of your day to stop striving and intentionally trust God instead of overmanaging.
Read Matthew 11:28–30 and thank Jesus for being your rest.
Today’s challenge is to stop carrying something God never asked you to carry alone.
Lord, thank You that Your rest still remains for Your people. In a world that pulls us in every direction, teach us to slow down and trust You. Forgive us for the times we live as though everything depends on our effort. Remind us that true rest is found in Your presence. Quiet our anxious thoughts, strengthen our weary hearts, and help us to walk by faith instead of pressure. Today we surrender our burdens to You and receive the peace that only You can give. In Jesus’ name, amen.
