He Keeps His Word

There are people in our lives whose word means something. If they tell you they’ll be there, you don’t wonder whether they’ll show up. If they make a promise, you can count on it. Unfortunately, we’ve also known the opposite. Broken promises have a way of teaching us to be cautious. And sometimes, without realizing it, we bring that same caution into our relationship with God.
“Know therefore that the LORD your God is God, the faithful God who keeps covenant and steadfast love with those who love him and keep his commandments, to a thousand generations,”
Deuteronomy 7:9 — ESV
Moses is speaking to Israel as they prepare to enter the Promised Land. And before they step into what God has for them, Moses reminds them of something they absolutely cannot afford to forget:
God is faithful.
That sounds simple until life gives you a reason to question it.
It’s easy to talk about God’s faithfulness when the prayer gets answered the way we hoped. When the door opens. When the test results are good. When the relationship is restored. When there’s enough money in the account. When everything seems to be moving in the right direction.
But what about when you’ve prayed and nothing seems to be changing?
What about when God made a promise, but you can’t see any evidence of it yet?
That’s where this verse becomes more than something nice to put on a coffee mug.
Notice what Moses doesn’t say. He doesn’t tell Israel, “God will probably come through.” He calls Him “the faithful God.”
Faithfulness isn’t something God occasionally does. It is part of who He is.
And that matters because our circumstances change constantly.
One phone call can change your week. One conversation can change a relationship. One unexpected expense can change your plans. One diagnosis can change your priorities. We live in a world where things can look completely different by tonight than they did when we woke up this morning.
But God doesn’t wake up different.
His character doesn’t shift with our circumstances.
His promises aren’t dependent upon His mood.
Moses says He “keeps covenant and steadfast love.” God doesn’t simply make promises. He keeps them.
Now, that doesn’t mean God always does what we want Him to do. There’s a big difference between trusting God’s promises and expecting God to follow our plans.
Sometimes we say, “God, I trusted You,” when what we really mean is, “God, I expected You to do this the way I thought You would.”
I’ve had to learn that those aren’t the same thing.
God can be completely faithful while taking us down a road we never would have chosen.
Think about Israel. They were standing on the edge of something God had promised generations earlier. Abraham never saw the full fulfillment. Neither did Isaac. Neither did Jacob.
Yet God had not forgotten.
That phrase in today’s verse catches my attention: “to a thousand generations.”
We tend to measure God’s faithfulness in days and weeks.
God thinks in generations.
That means there may be things God is doing in your life right now that are bigger than you. Your obedience today may affect your children. Your grandchildren. People you may never meet.
You may never see the full reach of one faithful decision.
But there’s another side to this verse we shouldn’t skip over. Moses connects God’s covenant love with people who love Him and keep His commandments.
Biblical faith isn’t just believing that God will be faithful to me.
It’s responding to His faithfulness with obedience.
We don’t obey Him to convince Him to love us. We obey because we trust the One who already does.
And sometimes obedience means taking the next step before you know how everything is going to work out.
Maybe that’s where you are today.
You don’t need God to show you the next ten years.
You may not even need Him to show you the next ten steps.
You just need enough faith to take the next one.
God has been faithful before you arrived at this moment. He is faithful in this moment. And whatever you’re walking into next, He will still be faithful when you get there.
Your circumstances may change.
Your God will not.
Action Steps
* Remember: Write down one specific way God has been faithful to you in the past. Don’t let today’s uncertainty erase yesterday’s evidence.
* Identify: Ask yourself where fear or disappointment has caused you to question God’s character.
* Obey: What is one thing you already know God is asking you to do? Stop waiting for the entire plan and take that step today.
Challenge for the Day
When something unexpected happens today, resist the urge to immediately ask, “God, what are You doing?” Instead, remind yourself: “I may not understand what God is doing, but I know who God is. He is faithful.”
Prayer
Father, thank You that Your faithfulness doesn’t depend on my circumstances. Forgive me for the times I’ve confused Your faithfulness with getting the outcome I wanted. Help me trust Your character when I can’t understand Your plan. Give me the courage to obey You today, knowing that You have never stopped being faithful. Amen.
