A Living Sacrifice

There’s a difference between believing in Jesus and surrendering to Him.
Many of us are willing to invite Christ into certain parts of our lives. We’ll trust Him with our eternity, but struggle to trust Him with our schedule, our finances, our relationships, our dreams, or our plans. Romans 12:1 reminds us that following Jesus was never intended to be a part-time commitment. It’s an invitation to place our entire lives in His hands.
“I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship.”
- Romans 12:1 (ESV)
Paul begins this chapter with one important word: therefore. Whenever you see “therefore,” it’s worth asking what it’s there for.
In the first eleven chapters of Romans, Paul has unpacked the incredible mercy of God. He has explained our sin, God’s grace, Christ’s sacrifice, forgiveness, justification, and the hope we have because of Jesus. Then he says, therefore…
Our obedience isn’t an attempt to earn God’s love. It’s our response to God’s mercy.
That’s an important distinction.
Under the Old Testament system, sacrifices were placed on an altar and died there. But Paul calls us to be a living sacrifice. That means every day we willingly place ourselves back on the altar. We choose to surrender our attitudes, our ambitions, our words, our time, and our decisions to the Lord.
The challenge is that living sacrifices have a tendency to crawl off the altar.
We surrender on Sunday and then try to take control again on Monday. We trust God until life gets uncomfortable. We obey until obedience costs us something.
Yet every morning offers another opportunity to say, “Lord, today belongs to You.”
I’ve discovered that surrender isn’t usually one dramatic decision. More often, it’s a thousand small ones. It’s choosing forgiveness when holding a grudge feels easier. It’s speaking truth when silence would be more comfortable. It’s serving when no one is watching. It’s saying, “Not my will, but Yours.”
And here’s something we sometimes miss: Paul calls this worship.
Worship is certainly expressed through songs, but it doesn’t end when the music stops. Worship continues in the way we treat people, the integrity we demonstrate at work, the choices we make when no one else is looking, and the way we honor Christ with our everyday lives.
God isn’t asking for a piece of your life.
He’s inviting you to trust Him with all of it.
Ironically, when we finally surrender everything, we discover we haven’t lost anything that truly matters. We’ve simply placed our lives into the hands of the One who knows us best and loves us most.
Action Steps
* Ask God to reveal one area of your life that you’ve been reluctant to fully surrender.
* Begin your day with a simple prayer of surrender before making your plans.
* Choose one act of obedience today that demonstrates your worship through action.
Challenge for the Day
Before you go to bed tonight, ask yourself one question: “Did I live today as though my life belonged to Jesus?” If the answer is no in an area, place it back on the altar and trust Him with it tomorrow.
Prayer
Father, thank You for Your incredible mercy. You have given me far more than I deserve through Jesus Christ. Help me not to hold anything back from You. Teach me to surrender my whole life—not out of obligation, but out of gratitude for all You have done. May my words, my choices, and my actions become an act of worship that honors You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
