Do Not Worry About Tomorrow

07/22/2026

Sometimes life feels like one long list of “what ifs.”

What if the money doesn’t stretch far enough? What if the diagnosis gets worse? What if I lose my job? What if my family never changes? Worry has a way of borrowing tomorrow’s troubles and dragging them into today. Before long, it steals our joy, our peace, and even our ability to see how God is already providing.

Jesus knew His followers would wrestle with those thoughts. That’s why He addressed worry directly, not with condemnation, but with an invitation to trust the Father.

25 “Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing?
Matthew 6:25 (ESV)

When we focus only on today’s verse, it can almost sound like Jesus is simply telling us, “Stop worrying.” But when you continue reading, verses 26-34, you discover that He isn’t just giving a command, He’s giving us reasons to trust.

He points to the birds. They don’t panic over tomorrow’s meals, yet the Father feeds them. Then He points to the flowers. They don’t strive to impress anyone, yet God clothes them with a beauty that exceeded even Solomon’s royal wardrobe.

Jesus isn’t saying that birds never gather food or that we shouldn’t work. Birds still build nests. They still search for worms. Flowers still grow through the process God designed. The point is that they live under the Father’s care. They don’t carry the burden of trying to control tomorrow.

Neither should we.

I’ve learned that worry often disguises itself as responsibility. We convince ourselves that if we think about the problem long enough, somehow we’ll solve it. But Jesus asks a simple question: “Which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his span of life?” The answer, of course, is none of us. Worry drains today’s strength without changing tomorrow’s outcome.

Then comes one of the greatest invitations in all of Scripture: “Seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness.” Jesus redirects our attention. Instead of making our first priority securing every detail of life, He tells us to make God our first priority. When our hearts are fixed on Him, everything else finds its proper place.

That doesn’t mean every problem instantly disappears. Bills still come. Doctor appointments still happen. Relationships still require hard conversations. But we face those realities with the confidence that our heavenly Father already knows what we need before we ever ask.

Read how Jesus ends the passage in verse 34. He doesn’t promise that tomorrow will be trouble-free. In fact, He says tomorrow has its own troubles. But He also reminds us that God only gives us today’s grace for today’s burdens. When we try to carry tomorrow’s load today, we’re carrying weight God never intended us to bear.

So today, trust Him with today. When tomorrow arrives, His grace will be waiting there too.

Action Steps

* Spend a few minutes identifying one specific worry you’ve been carrying, and intentionally give it to God in prayer.
* Before checking the news or your phone tomorrow morning, spend time seeking God first through Scripture and prayer.
* Every time anxious thoughts surface today, remind yourself, “My Father already knows what I need.”

Challenge for the Day

Each time you catch yourself worrying about tomorrow, stop and thank God for one way He has already provided for you today. Let gratitude replace anxiety.

Prayer

Father, thank You for knowing every need before I ever speak it. Forgive me for the times I allow worry to become greater than my trust in You. Help me to seek Your kingdom first and to rest in Your faithful care. Give me the grace to live today with confidence, knowing that tomorrow is already in Your hands. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
