God Gives the Growth
05/08/2026
There are moments in life when we work hard, pray hard, and pour ourselves into people or situations, yet we still wonder if anything is really changing. Parents wonder if their children are listening. Pastors wonder if hearts are being transformed. Business leaders wonder if their efforts matter. Sometimes we confuse our assignment with God’s responsibility. We think everything depends on us. But Scripture reminds us today that while we are called to be faithful, only God can produce lasting growth.
“So neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is anything, but only God, who makes things grow.” — 1 Corinthians 3:7 (NIV)
Paul was addressing division in the church. Some people were elevating certain leaders over others, arguing about who was more important. Paul quickly redirected their attention. One person may plant seeds. Another may water them. But neither has the power to create life. Only God does.
That truth is freeing.
You may be planting seeds of kindness into someone who seems distant from God. You may be watering a relationship that feels dry. You may be faithfully serving in a place where you see little visible fruit. But growth is not ultimately your burden to carry.
Farmers understand this principle well. A farmer can prepare the soil, sow the seed, and water the field, but he cannot force the seed to break open underground. He cannot command life into existence. There is a mysterious work happening beneath the surface that only God controls.
The same is true spiritually.
Sometimes we become discouraged because we expect immediate results. We want breakthroughs overnight. We want prayers answered instantly. We want people to change quickly. Yet God often works slowly, deeply, and invisibly before anything appears on the surface.
Think about bamboo trees. For years after planting, there seems to be little or no growth above ground. But underneath the soil, an extensive root system is developing. Then suddenly, in a short period of time, the tree shoots upward dramatically. What looked like “nothing happening” was actually preparation happening.
Maybe that is where you are today. You have been praying, serving, giving, loving, and trusting, but you do not yet see visible growth. Don’t quit. God is still working beneath the surface.
This verse also protects us from pride. When things do grow, when lives are changed, when doors open, when blessings come, we remember that the glory belongs to God. We may have been part of the process, but He is the source of the increase.
God never asked you to be the Savior. He simply asked you to be faithful.
Action Steps:
* Keep planting seeds of encouragement, truth, and love even if you do not see immediate results.
* Stop measuring your success only by visible outcomes.
* Thank God for the people who helped “water” your faith journey.
* Spend time praying over the areas where you are waiting for growth.
Challenge for Today:
Identify one area where you have become discouraged because growth seems slow. Surrender that burden back to God today and trust Him with the process. Your responsibility is faithfulness. His responsibility is the increase.
Prayer:
Lord, thank You for reminding me that You are the one who brings growth. Help me to stay faithful in planting and watering without becoming discouraged or prideful. Teach me to trust Your timing, even when I cannot see what You are doing beneath the surface. Strengthen my faith to keep serving, loving, and believing that You are always at work. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
