A Generous Life
12/02/2025
“A generous person will prosper; whoever refreshes others will be refreshed.”
- Proverbs 11:25 (NIV)
There is a quiet but powerful rhythm woven into the Kingdom of God. One that moves against the grain of a world that teaches us to hold tightly, protect ourselves, and store up whatever we can. Yet Scripture paints a radically different picture. In God’s economy, giving isn’t loss, it’s gain. Refreshing others doesn’t drain us it restores us. And generosity isn’t weakness, it’s strength.
Today’s verse invites us into this beautiful countercultural truth. The word refreshes in Hebrew carries the idea of giving someone water in a dry place, of becoming an oasis in another person’s desert. And here’s what God promises: when you live that way, He makes you the one who gets watered.
Think about that for a moment.
We spend so much energy in life trying to ensure we don’t run dry, holding onto time, guarding our resources, protecting our emotional capacity. But God says the pathway to being filled is often through the very act of pouring out.
I’ve watched this truth play out countless times in ministry. There have been seasons where I felt spent, mentally, emotionally, spiritually. But then God placed someone in front of me who needed encouragement, prayer, a listening ear, or simple kindness. And every single time, as I poured out, He poured in. It’s as if God whispered, “Jeff, this is how I refresh you…through the very generosity you’re offering.”
This proverb also challenges the scarcity mindset that quietly whispers, “What if you won’t have enough?”
Yet Scripture consistently reminds us the opposite is true: the generous life opens doors, deepens relationships, expands faith, and places us right in the current of God’s provision.
Action Steps:
1. Ask God for someone to refresh today. A text, call, prayer, or a small gift may be exactly what their soul needs.
2. Practice generosity in a tangible way. Time, attention, finances, or encouragement, give something away on purpose.
3. Reflect tonight on how God refreshed you. Notice where His grace quietly refilled what you poured out.
Challenge for the Day:
Be a “water carrier” for someone’s weary soul today. Don’t wait for perfect conditions, step into generosity and expect God to meet you with refreshing.
Prayer:
Father, thank You for creating a Kingdom where generosity doesn’t empty us but enriches us. Teach us to open our hands, to loosen our grip on what we think we must control, and to trust Your promise that those who refresh others will be refreshed. Lead us to the person who needs encouragement today. Let our giving reflect Your heart, and let Your Spirit pour fresh strength into us as we walk in obedience. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
