Prepare the Way

“A voice of one calling: ‘In the wilderness prepare the way for the Lord; make straight in the desert a highway for our God.’”
- Isaiah 40:3 (NIV)
Isaiah’s words thunder across time. A solitary voice crying out in the wilderness, cutting through silence and complacency. It’s not a cry of despair, but one of divine anticipation. God is coming. But before His arrival, the ground must be made ready.
When Isaiah first spoke these words, Israel was a people weary and worn from exile. They had lost their way, their hope, and their sense of God’s nearness. Into that desolation came a promise: God Himself was on His way to rescue, to restore, and to renew. But the people had a part to play, they had to prepare.
Centuries later, John the Baptist fulfilled this prophecy as the forerunner to Jesus. He lived simply, preached boldly, and baptized those who were ready to turn from sin. His message was straightforward: “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near.” Repentance was the shovel and pickaxe used to clear the path for the King.
But this isn’t just ancient history, it’s a living word. You and I are called to be both the voice and the road. We are called to announce His coming to others and to prepare our own hearts for His reign. Our wilderness may not be a desert of sand and stone, but rather a spiritual one, crowded with distractions, pride, unhealed wounds, or misplaced priorities.
Every time we choose forgiveness over resentment, trust over fear, and obedience over comfort, we’re making straight a path for God to travel. The smoother the path, the swifter His presence moves through us. When we let Him have full access, our hearts become highways of grace that lead others straight to Jesus.
Think of it like preparing your home for a long-awaited guest. You clean, organize, and make space so that they feel welcome. God desires that same preparation of the soul. He wants our hearts uncluttered and open, ready for His arrival, not rushed or distracted.
In truth, revival doesn’t begin in a crowd, it begins in a wilderness heart made ready for God’s glory.
Action Steps:
1. Spend time reflecting on what “wilderness” areas exist in your life. Where have you resisted God’s presence or direction?
2. Ask the Holy Spirit to help you “make straight” what has become crooked, relationships that need mending, habits that need breaking, or attitudes that need humbling.
3. Speak like John the Baptist this week. Share a word of hope with someone who feels far from God. You may be the voice that prepares the way for Him in their life.
Today’s Challenge:
Find one quiet place today, your car, your porch, your prayer chair, and just whisper, “Lord, I am ready. Come into the wilderness of my heart and make it holy ground.”
Prayer:
Heavenly Father, thank You for calling me to prepare a way for You in the midst of my wilderness. Help me clear out what hinders Your presence, fear, pride, and distraction. Straighten the crooked paths within me and make my life a road You delight to travel. May others see Your glory through me. In Jesus’ name, amen.
