The Harvest Is Plentiful

10/23/2025

"Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field.”
— Matthew 9:37–38 (NIV)

Jesus looked out over the crowds and saw not just people, but souls, broken, weary, hungry for truth. His heart was moved with compassion because they were “harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd.” It was then that He turned to His disciples and said these words that still echo today: “The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few.”

Picture yourself standing at the edge of a golden field, ready for harvest, yet no one is there to gather the crop. The fruit ripens and falls to the ground, wasted. Not because there isn’t a harvest, but because there aren’t enough workers. That’s the picture Jesus painted. The need is not the problem. The problem is the shortage of people willing to respond.

Throughout history, God has always looked for willing hearts more than perfect resumes. Moses stuttered. Gideon doubted. Jonah ran. Yet when they finally said yes, God used them mightily. The same invitation stands today, to step into the harvest field around us: our workplaces, neighborhoods, schools, and families. The harvest isn’t just in distant mission fields, it’s right where you live.

We can’t all go everywhere, but we can all go somewhere. Maybe your “field” is your office. Maybe it’s your child’s soccer team or the barista you see every morning. Jesus calls us to notice, to pray, and to act.

Action Steps:
1. Pray intentionally—Ask God today to show you one person who needs encouragement or prayer.
2. Prepare faithfully—Spend time in God’s Word so you’re ready when opportunities arise.
3. Participate boldly—Share your story. Offer hope. Love in action, not just words.

Challenge for the Day:
Don’t just pray for the harvest, be one of the workers. Look around you today. There’s someone waiting for a word, a smile, or a prayer that points them to Jesus.

Prayer:
Father, open my eyes to the harvest all around me. Give me a heart of compassion like Yours. Help me to see people not as interruptions but as divine opportunities. Send me, Lord, use my hands, my words, and my life to reach those who need You most. Amen.
