A New Command of Love

08/30/2025

“A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.”
— John 13:34 (NIV)

When Jesus gathered with His disciples in the upper room, He knew the cross was only hours away. It was in this moment, with the weight of the world pressing on Him, that He gave them a “new command.” Love wasn’t new, God had called His people to love Him and love their neighbor since the days of Moses. But what was new was the standard Jesus set: “As I have loved you.”

Think about that. The disciples had watched Jesus wash their feet, heal the sick, forgive the sinner, and feed the hungry. They had seen Him patient with their failures and tender in their doubts. In just a few hours, He would show them love in its ultimate form, laying down His life for them. This is the measure of love Jesus calls us to embody.

Loving others as He loves us is not about sentiment or convenience. It is about sacrifice, humility, and choosing to serve even when it costs us something. Imagine a world where every believer lived this out fully. Families would be transformed, communities healed, and churches overflowing with grace instead of judgment.

Just look what has happened right here in our small town with the flood. Devastation, families without a home. Then, without hesitation, members of the community rallied to provide clothes, meals, shelter, and financial help. Their actions preached louder than any sermon, this was love in action, reflecting the heart of Jesus.

Action steps to help on your journey:

Look for one tangible way today to serve someone without expecting anything in return.

Practice forgiveness where resentment lingers, Jesus’ love covers offenses.

Speak words of encouragement to someone who may feel unseen or overlooked.

Today’s Challenge:
Ask yourself, “Am I loving others the way Jesus loves me?” Find one person today to love with that kind of selfless, Christlike love.

Prayer:
Lord Jesus, thank You for showing me what true love looks like. Help me to love others as You have loved me—with patience, humility, and sacrifice. Teach me to see beyond myself and reflect Your heart in every relationship. May my life be marked by Your love so others see You in me. Amen.
