The God Who Goes Before You
08/27/2025
“The Lord himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged.”
– Deuteronomy 31:8 (NIV)
Life often brings moments when we feel like we are standing on the edge of something bigger than ourselves, stepping into a new job, facing a health challenge, moving into a new season, or navigating a deep personal loss. In those moments, fear and uncertainty can grip us. That’s exactly where the Israelites stood when Moses spoke these words. They were about to cross into the Promised Land without the leader they had relied on for decades. Instead, Moses reminds them that it isn’t him they need to follow, it is the Lord who goes before them.
Notice the promise: God doesn’t just walk beside you, He goes ahead of you. Think of a parent walking into a dark room first to turn on the light before calling their child in. God enters into the unknown before you ever get there. He surveys the path, clears the dangers, and prepares the way. Then He walks alongside you, never abandoning, never forsaking.
When I was a kid, I remember being afraid to jump off the diving board. The water looked too deep, the height too high. But my dad stood in the pool below, looking up and saying, “Jump, I’ve got you.” His presence didn’t change the fact that the water was deep, but it gave me the courage to leap. That’s what God does for us, He positions Himself ahead of us and says, “Don’t be afraid, I’ve got you.”
Action steps to help on your journey:
Write down one situation in your life right now that feels uncertain or scary.
Pray specifically, asking God to remind you that He has already gone ahead of you in that situation.
Memorize Deuteronomy 31:8 and speak it out loud whenever discouragement or fear rises.
Today’s Challenge:
Step into one area of your life where fear has held you back, trusting that God has already prepared the way.
Prayer:
Father, thank You for being the One who goes before me. When I face the unknown, help me remember that You are already there, preparing the path and standing beside me. Remove my fear and replace it with trust. May I walk in courage today, knowing You will never leave me or forsake me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
