Strength for the Journey

“Blessed are those whose strength is in you, whose hearts are set on pilgrimage.”
– Psalm 84:5 (NIV)

There is something beautiful about being on a journey. Whether it’s a family road trip, a backpacking adventure, or a spiritual pursuit, journeys change us. The psalmist reminds us that those who are truly blessed are the ones who find their strength not in their own resources, but in God, and who have set their hearts on pilgrimage.

A pilgrimage is not just about reaching a destination; it’s about walking with purpose toward God. In ancient times, pilgrims would travel to Jerusalem, often through difficult terrain, singing songs of praise along the way. Their journey was an act of worship, not just the temple visit at the end. In the same way, our Christian walk is a pilgrimage. We are moving toward God’s presence daily, and each step, whether through joy or hardship, forms us more into the likeness of Christ.

Life has valleys, financial stress, broken relationships, health struggles, but when our strength is in God, those valleys don’t define us. Instead, they become places of growth and refreshment. The psalmist even says later that the Valley of Baka (a dry place) becomes a place of springs for the pilgrim. What the enemy meant to dry us out, God uses to refresh and sustain us.

Think of it this way: a hiker carrying too much weight quickly burns out, but one who travels light and depends on the path markers can go farther. When we try to walk life’s journey in our own strength, we grow weary. But when we draw strength from the Lord, we can endure, and even find joy along the way.

Action Steps to help on your journey:

Begin your day by surrendering your strength to God, saying, “Lord, I need You to carry me through today.”

Reframe challenges as part of your spiritual journey, not interruptions to it.

Take time to “set your heart” on God’s presence, through prayer, Scripture, or worship.

Today’s Challenge:
When a difficult moment comes, pause and ask, “Am I walking in my own strength, or God’s?” Make a conscious choice to lean into His strength instead of your own.

Father, thank You for being my strength when I am weak. Help me to keep my heart set on You, no matter what valleys or mountains I face. Teach me to see this life as a holy pilgrimage, where every step brings me closer to Your presence. May my journey be marked by trust, worship, and dependence on You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
