A Safe Place in the Storm

08/13/2025

“The Lord is good, a refuge in times of trouble. He cares for those who trust in him.”
— Nahum 1:7 (NIV)

The book of Nahum was written in a time when the people of God were surrounded by the threat of the Assyrian Empire, a powerful and ruthless enemy. To them, fear was not a passing feeling, it was the air they breathed. Yet in the middle of this prophetic book, we find this beautiful promise: the Lord is good, He is a refuge, and He cares deeply for those who put their trust in Him.

Imagine a lighthouse standing firm during a fierce hurricane. The waves crash, the wind howls, and darkness tries to swallow everything whole. Yet the lighthouse doesn’t move, it keeps shining, guiding ships to safety. That’s what God is like for us. No matter what chaos swirls around us, He remains our steady shelter.

Life’s “storms” can come in many forms, a financial crisis, a doctor’s diagnosis, a broken relationship, or an unexpected loss. In those moments, we don’t just need answers; we need a place to rest, heal, and find hope. Nahum reminds us that God Himself is that place. His goodness is not seasonal, His care is not occasional, and His protection is not conditional. Trusting Him doesn’t mean the storm disappears, but it does mean we can stand secure within His care until the storm passes.

Action Steps to help on your journey:

Start your day by declaring aloud: “The Lord is good, my refuge, and He cares for me.”

Identify one fear or burden you’ve been holding onto and intentionally place it in God’s hands through prayer.

Share Nahum 1:7 with someone who’s going through a difficult time, as a reminder they’re not alone.

Today’s Challenge:
When trouble rises today, whether big or small, pause before reacting. Whisper Nahum 1:7 to yourself, and choose to rest in God’s refuge rather than your own strength.

Lord, thank You that You are good, unchanging, and my safe place in every storm. I choose to trust You with my troubles, my fears, and my future. Hold me close when the winds of life howl, and let me always remember Your care is constant and Your love is strong. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
