Set Your Mind Above
08/03/2025
“Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.”
— Colossians 3:2 (NIV)
There’s something powerful about focus. A runner with their eyes fixed on the finish line doesn’t get distracted by the crowd. A soldier locked into their mission won’t lose their way in the noise of battle. And a follower of Jesus, whose mind is set on heaven, can walk through the chaos of life with a steady heart.
Paul’s words in today’s verse serve as a reminder to recalibrate our internal compass. “Set your minds on things above,” he says, not drifting toward, not occasionally glancing at, but setting, like a thermostat, not a thermometer. This isn’t about ignoring the world around us but about engaging with it from an eternal perspective.
Have you ever tried to navigate using your phone’s GPS when the signal drops or the map won’t update? It’s frustrating, isn’t it? In a similar way, when our spiritual signal is weak, when our minds are set more on success, possessions, opinions, or even fears, we lose sight of where God is leading us. Paul is encouraging the Colossian believers , and us, to fix our inner attention not on the passing things of earth but on the unshakable truth of Christ, who is seated at the right hand of God.
Think about this: when Peter walked on water toward Jesus, he was fine….until he shifted his focus to the wind and waves. The same is true for us. When our minds are set on Christ, we find courage in uncertainty, peace in pressure, and direction in confusion.
This isn’t a one-time decision, it’s a daily practice. Like setting your alarm clock each morning or resetting your passwords regularly, we must continually reset our minds toward God’s ways. This means soaking in Scripture, choosing prayer over panic, serving others instead of self, and remembering that we are citizens of heaven just passing through this world.
Here are some things to help you on your journey.
Begin your day by reading a verse that lifts your gaze heavenward.
Identify one “earthly thing” that’s been consuming your thoughts and lay it before God in prayer.
Choose to serve or encourage someone today as a reminder that your life is about more than just your own needs.
My challenge for you is this:
Throughout the day, when you feel distracted, anxious, or overwhelmed, pause and whisper, “Lord, help me set my mind on You.” Watch how that simple re-centering shifts your perspective.
Father, thank You for calling me to live with eternity in mind. In a world full of distractions and worries, help me to keep my mind set on You. Teach me to see my circumstances through the lens of Your truth and Your kingdom. Renew my thinking, restore my focus, and use my life to reflect what really matters. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
