Let There Be Light

“And God said, ‘Let there be light,’ and there was light.”
– Genesis 1:3 (NIV)
At the dawn of time, God spoke four words and everything changed. In the deep void of nothingness, darkness covered the face of the earth. But with just one sentence, “Let there be light,” God pierced that darkness. This wasn’t just the creation of physical light; it was the beginning of order, hope, and the unveiling of God’s divine power.
Understand this, God didn’t build light. He didn’t search for light. He spoke it into being.
That same voice that broke through the chaos of the cosmos still speaks today. Maybe you’re walking through your own form of darkness, a season of grief, confusion, fear, or doubt. And maybe it feels like the light has gone out. But the God who created light with a word can still bring clarity to your confusion, peace to your panic, and purpose to your pain.
When Thomas Edison invented the electric light bulb, he didn’t do it overnight. It took years of failure and experimentation. But when God creates light, it’s instantaneous. Powerful. Life-giving. And available.
Sometimes, the greatest step of faith is simply to invite God’s light into our situation. When we open His Word, when we pray with expectation, when we choose to trust even when we don’t yet understand, we are saying, “Let there be light” over our lives.
If light was God’s first creative act, perhaps our first prayer today should echo that. “God, speak light into my marriage. Speak light into my family. Speak light into my calling. Illuminate the places I’ve tried to hide. Heal the parts I’ve let grow dark.”
Because where His light shines, darkness has to flee.
Here are some things to help you on your journey.
Start your day by reading a Psalm out loud and asking God to shine His truth into your heart.
Identify one area in your life where you’ve felt “in the dark,” and ask God to bring His light and wisdom into it.
Share a word of encouragement or truth with someone who may be walking through a dark time.
My challenge for you is this:
Speak light. Into your words. Into your thoughts. Into your atmosphere. Whether you’re at work, at home, or alone in the car, declare God’s light over your day. Don’t just see the light. Be the light.
Heavenly Father, thank You for being the God who speaks into chaos and brings order, who speaks into darkness and brings light. I invite Your light into every part of my life today, my heart, my mind, my relationships, and my future. Expose what needs to change and illuminate what needs to grow. Help me reflect Your light in all I say and do. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
