Hunger That Satisfies
06/26/2025
“Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.”
—Matthew 5:6 (NIV)
What are you hungry for today?
We all wake up with cravings. Some of them are physical like coffee, breakfast, exercise. While others are deeper and more enduring, the longing for meaning, peace, justice, or connection. Jesus, in this fourth Beatitude, speaks directly to those deeper cravings. He blesses those who have a deep, soul-level hunger, not for power, money, or comfort, but for righteousness.
To hunger and thirst for righteousness means to desire with intensity what is right in God’s eyes: His justice, His holiness, His presence, and His way of doing things. It’s not a casual interest, it’s a consuming passion. Jesus says those who crave this are blessed, not because they are perfect, but because they long for what matters most.
Think of a time you were truly hungry. Your thoughts narrowed; your priorities shifted. Hunger demands attention. That’s the kind of desire Jesus is commending, one that orients your whole life toward God’s will.
There was a young man who had everything going for him, success, respect, comfort, but his heart felt empty. He started volunteering at a local ministry just to fill time. Over months, something shifted. He began to see the brokenness around him, and then the brokenness in his own heart. God awakened in him a hunger not just to do good but to be made right. He began to seek Jesus, not as an add-on, but as the Bread of Life. And Jesus met him there, filling him with peace, purpose, and transformation.
This promise from Jesus is personal. If you hunger for righteousness, for God’s way to become your way, you won’t be left starving. You will be filled.
Here are some things you can do to help on your journey.
Start your day by asking: “What am I hungry for today?” Invite the Holy Spirit to align your desires with God’s.
Fast for one meal this week, not for health reasons but to pray for deeper hunger for God.
Reflect on areas where you’ve become spiritually “full” of the wrong things, comfort, busyness, distraction and ask God to empty you so He can fill you.
My challenge for you is this:
Crave what Christ craves. Let your hunger drive you to Scripture, to prayer, to service, and to moments of stillness before God. If you truly hunger for Him, He promises to meet you with more than enough.
Lord, I confess that I often hunger for things that don’t last. Stir within me a deeper craving for righteousness. Help me long for what pleases You, for the things that reflect Your heart. I want to be filled, not with the world, but with Your truth, grace, and justice. Create in me a hunger that only You can satisfy. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
