From Darkness to Light

“For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves.”
—Colossians 1:13 (NIV)
There is something breathtaking about rescue stories. Think about the news headlines when miners trapped deep underground are finally pulled to safety, or when a child lost in the wilderness is miraculously found and carried home. These stories grip our hearts because they echo a deeper spiritual reality, one that every believer has experienced.
Today’s verse is a powerful reminder that our salvation is not just a slight improvement to our lives, it is a dramatic rescue. Paul says we were trapped in the “dominion of darkness.” That’s not poetic fluff. It’s reality. Before Christ, we lived under the oppressive rule of sin, fear, shame, and spiritual blindness. The enemy’s dominion may offer temporary pleasure, but it always leads to bondage and death.
But God didn’t leave us there.
He rescued us. Not because we climbed our way out or earned our escape, but because He reached down in mercy and grace. And more than just pulling us out, He transferred us into a new kingdom, the Kingdom of His beloved Son, Jesus. In Christ’s Kingdom, we live under a new reign: one of love, peace, forgiveness, and freedom.
Imagine someone living for years in a dungeon, then suddenly being escorted into a palace, not as a visitor, but as a beloved family member. That’s the kind of transformation Paul is describing. And it should change how we see ourselves and live our lives. We are no longer prisoners of the past. We are citizens of heaven, children of the King.
When the enemy tries to whisper lies of condemnation or lure us back into old patterns, we can boldly say, “I’ve been rescued. I don’t live there anymore.”
Here are some things you can do to help you on your journey.
Reflect on your own rescue story. Where were you before Christ found you? Write it down or share it with someone today.
Identify areas where you may still be living as if you’re under the old dominion. Surrender those to Jesus in prayer.
Walk in your new identity. Begin your day by declaring, “I live in the Kingdom of the Son He loves.”
My challenge for you is this:
Live today like a citizen of the Kingdom. Speak, love, and act like someone who has been rescued and restored.
Father, thank You for rescuing me from the darkness I once lived in. Thank You for not only saving me but also bringing me into the glorious Kingdom of Your Son. Help me live today in the freedom, love, and truth that comes from belonging to You. May my life reflect the light of Your Kingdom to those still walking in darkness. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
