Losing to Gain: The Paradox of the Cross
06/06/2025
“For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me and for the gospel will save it.”
- Mark 8:35 (NIV)
At first glance, Jesus’ words here seem completely upside down. In a world that screams, “Look out for number one,” “Build your brand,” and “Protect your peace,” Jesus dares to flip the script. He presents a paradox: to truly live, we must surrender; to save our lives, we must lose them, for Him.
Jesus spoke these words after telling His disciples that following Him meant taking up their cross. He wasn’t talking about a minor inconvenience or a tough Monday, He meant complete surrender. This wasn’t just poetic language. Jesus would soon carry His own cross, laying down His life in love and obedience. And He invites us to do the same.
Think of a seed. Alone, it’s small and seemingly insignificant. But when it’s buried, lost in the soil, it begins to break open, and life bursts forth. It grows into something fruitful. The same is true of us. When we “lose” our lives by letting go of selfish ambitions, by dying to pride, comfort, or control for Jesus’ sake, we actually discover a life richer and fuller than anything we could build on our own.
Jim Elliot, a missionary who gave his life to bring the gospel to an unreached tribe, once wrote, “He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain what he cannot lose.” That’s the essence of Mark 8:35. Giving up the temporary for the eternal. Trading self-glory for God’s glory.
This verse doesn’t just speak to martyrdom or missions work, it challenges us daily. It shows up in how we prioritize our time, how we love others, how we forgive, how we handle our resources. Losing your life may mean choosing integrity over advancement, choosing service over spotlight, choosing Jesus over comfort.
Here are so things you can do to help you on your journey.
Reflect:
What part of your life are you trying to “save” or control that Jesus is calling you to surrender?
Surrender:
Choose one specific area today, your schedule, an unforgiven hurt, a financial decision, and submit it to Jesus.
Serve:
Look for a way to lose yourself in serving someone today without expecting anything in return.
My challenge for you is this:
Live today with eternity in mind. Choose one thing to “lose” for Jesus, your right to be first, your comfort, or your plans, and watch how He breathes new life into what you surrender.
Jesus, Your words cut through my desire for self-preservation. Teach me what it means to lose my life for Your sake and for the gospel. Give me the courage to surrender and the faith to trust that in giving up control, I find true life. Help me to follow You with a cross on my back and love in my heart. Amen.
