Eternal Gains

“For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come.”
— 1 Timothy 4:8 (NIV)
We live in a world that worships six-pack abs, step counts, and wellness challenges, it’s easy to get caught up in the pursuit of physical fitness. There’s nothing wrong with taking care of our bodies, in fact, Scripture affirms that it has some value. But Paul, writing to a young leader named Timothy, wants to ensure that our priorities stay in check.
Think about it: a personal trainer can help you strengthen your body, but only the Holy Spirit can strengthen your soul. A treadmill might increase your stamina, but only time with Jesus will prepare you for eternity.
Let’s imagine two men: one runs five miles a day, eats perfectly clean, and hasn’t missed a gym day in years. The other spends his mornings in prayer, soaking in the Word, and serving others with love and humility. Now, if you were in a spiritual battle, and you are, which of these men would you want fighting beside you?
Physical health fades. Our bodies age, our strength weakens, and one day we’ll breathe our last. But godliness, shaped through obedience, humility, and trust in Christ, gains value every single day. It impacts how we live now, and it secures our hope in the life to come. That’s a return on investment no gym membership can match.
This verse isn’t dismissing fitness; it’s elevating holiness. Godliness isn’t just for monks or ministers. It’s for parents, businesspeople, students, and retirees. It’s the daily discipline of living with Jesus at the center, training our hearts, minds, and habits toward Him.
Here are some things you can do to help you on your journey.
Reflect on how much time you dedicate to physical goals vs. spiritual growth.
Set aside 15 minutes today for undistracted prayer or Bible reading.
Find a “training partner,” someone to walk with you spiritually and keep you accountable.
My challenge for you is this:
Choose one discipline of godliness, prayer, worship, generosity, or service, and commit to it for 7 days. Let your spirit train harder than your body this week.
Father, thank You for the reminder that while caring for my body is good, training for godliness is eternal. Help me to desire the things that draw me closer to You. Give me strength to stay disciplined in my walk and remind me daily that Your ways lead to life, now and forever. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
