Words That Build

05/15/2025

Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.”
— Ephesians 4:29 (NIV)

Our words are not just sounds, they are seeds. Every conversation we have plants something: encouragement or discouragement, peace or tension, truth or confusion. That’s why Paul urges the believers in Ephesus to be intentional with their speech. He challenges them, and us, to speak words that build rather than break.

Think about a construction site. Every brick laid with care adds strength and structure. But careless or cracked bricks? They weaken the entire building. Our words work the same way. When we choose words that are helpful for building others up according to their needs, we participate in God’s work of strengthening His people.

But Paul doesn’t just say “be nice.” He specifically says “do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths.” The Greek word for “unwholesome” means rotten or decaying. It’s the kind of language that poisons relationships, gossip, sarcasm, slander, bitterness. Even a “harmless” jab or a critical tone can bruise someone deeply if not spoken in love.

Years ago, I watched a leader bring out the best in his team, not with authority, but with words. He made a habit of finding what each person did well and naming it publicly. “You’re a great problem solver.” “Your attention to detail saves us every time.” He wasn’t just generous, he was strategic. He knew that affirmation spoken at the right time can reroute someone’s self-doubt and remind them of their purpose.

That’s what Paul is calling us to. Words that build. Words that are timely, thoughtful, and tailored to the needs of others.

Here are some things you can do to help you on your journey.

Pause before speaking.
Ask, “Will this build up or tear down?”

Speak life intentionally. Compliment someone’s character or effort today.

Identify your habits.
If sarcasm, gossip, or criticism come too easily, ask God to help you replace them with kindness.

Use Scripture as speech training.
Let verses like Proverbs 15:1 and Colossians 4:6 guide your communication.

Choose one person today and speak something constructive and specific to them, face-to-face, in a text, or over the phone. Don’t just say “good job,” tell them why it mattered.

Lord, help me to use my words as tools, not weapons. Remind me daily that my mouth can either echo heaven or echo the world. Cleanse my speech of anything unwholesome, and fill my heart with truth, so that what overflows is life-giving and pure. Let my words reflect Your grace. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
