Masterpiece on Mission

“For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.”
- Ephesians 2:10 (NIV)
Take a moment and let that first phrase sink in, “we are God’s handiwork.” Another translation uses the word masterpiece. You are not a mistake. You are not the result of random chance. You are not just one of billions trying to make it through the chaos of life. You are handcrafted by the Creator of the universe, with precision, passion, and purpose.
I remember going on a field trip when I was in school. We went to an Amish community to learn about their way of life. I walked into a woodworkers shop and watched him work. He was a skilled woodworker, and I was fascinated by the pieces he made. Each one had a purpose, a chair to sit in, a table to gather around, a cabinet to hold cherished items. None of them existed just to be admired. They were built to be used, to serve, to carry out a specific function. And so were we.
Paul’s words today remind us that not only are we created by God, but we are also recreated in Christ Jesus. This is the essence of the gospel, God doesn’t just rescue us from sin, He remakes us for service. We are not saved by good works, but we are certainly saved for them. That means every day holds divine appointments. Every interaction is an opportunity. Every task, no matter how small, can be sacred when it’s done in obedience to the One who designed us.
Consider this: before you ever took your first breath, God had already written out the good works He wanted you to walk in. He set them in place, not as a burden, but as a blessing. When we walk in those works, we experience the joy of living with purpose and the peace of knowing we’re exactly where we’re meant to be.
Let’s stop comparing ourselves to others or wondering if we’re doing enough. Instead, let’s lean into the truth that God prepared these things in advance. All we have to do is walk in them, one faithful step at a time.
Try these following steps to help you on your journey.
Reflect on a gift or passion God has given you. How could you use it for His glory this week?
Ask God in prayer today, “Lord, what good work have You prepared for me to walk in today?”
Encourage someone else by reminding them that they, too, are God’s masterpiece.
Live today with this truth in mind: You are not trying to earn your worth, you are walking out your purpose. Look for one way to bless someone in a way that only you could, through your unique story, skills, and presence.
Father, thank You for making me Your handiwork. Thank You for loving me enough not only to save me but to give me a purpose. Help me to walk in the good works You’ve prepared for me, with courage and joy. Let my life reflect Your creativity, Your love, and Your mission. I surrender my plans to You today, lead me in Yours. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
