Approved and Unashamed

“Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth.”
—2 Timothy 2:15 (NIV)
Paul’s words to Timothy come as a challenge and a charge to every believer, especially those who lead, teach, and disciple others. The apostle is urging Timothy to live a life of diligence, integrity, and devotion, particularly when it comes to handling God’s Word.
The phrase “do your best” reminds us that spiritual maturity doesn’t happen by accident. It requires intentional effort. It’s like the student who wakes early to study, not just to pass the test, but to master the subject. Likewise, we are called to study Scripture not just to know about God, but to know Him and represent Him faithfully.
I once heard a story about a carpenter who was told to build one final house before retiring. Wanting to finish quickly, he cut corners, using cheaper materials and skipping important steps. When the house was complete, the employer handed the keys to the carpenter and said, “This is your retirement gift. The house is yours.” The carpenter was devastated. If he had known he was building his own home, he would have done his best.
In the same way, we’re building our spiritual lives and legacies with every choice we make. How we study, how we speak, how we live. Paul says we should aim to be “approved,” meaning tested and found faithful. A worker who can stand confidently before God because they have rightly handled truth.
To “correctly handle the word of truth” means more than just quoting verses. It means interpreting Scripture with care, applying it with wisdom, and living it out with humility. It means being rooted enough in truth to recognize error, strong enough in faith to stand firm, and loving enough to teach others well.
Here are some steps you can take today to ensure you are following God’s desires.
Set aside daily time to study God’s Word, not just read it. Use tools like concordances, devotionals, and commentaries to go deeper.
Reflect on how you live out God’s truth.
Are your actions aligned with what you believe?
Mentor or teach someone else. Helping others grow in their faith sharpens your own understanding.
Ask the Holy Spirit daily for discernment in rightly handling Scripture and applying it in love.
Choose a passage of Scripture and study it deeply. Look up its context, meaning, and how it applies to your life. Then, ask God to show you how to live it out. Commit to being a worker who brings glory to God in every word and deed.
Lord, help me to be a diligent student of Your Word. Give me a hunger to know You more and the discipline to seek You daily. Teach me to handle Your truth with reverence, accuracy, and love. Let my life reflect a worker who brings You joy and never shame. Guide my steps and guard my heart as I live to honor You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
