Choosing the Path of Life
03/03/2025
“Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it.”
- Matthew 7:13-14 (NIV)
Life is full of choices, but no choice is as significant as the one Jesus presents in this passage. He describes two gates, one wide, the other narrow, leading to two very different destinations. One road is broad, filled with travelers, easy to follow, and requiring little effort. The other is narrow, less traveled, and often challenging. The wide road leads to destruction, while the narrow road leads to life.
At first glance, the wide gate seems more appealing. It offers the path of least resistance, where culture dictates morality, and self-indulgence is celebrated. It requires no discipline, no sacrifice, and no real commitment. It’s a road filled with temporary pleasures but ultimate ruin.
In contrast, the narrow gate is difficult to enter. It requires surrendering our will to God, choosing obedience over convenience, and standing firm in faith even when it’s unpopular. The narrow road is not a legalistic checklist but a life dedicated to following Christ. It’s a path of humility, faith, and perseverance. Jesus Himself is the gate, and to enter, we must accept Him as Lord and Savior.
Choosing the narrow road isn’t easy. It may mean rejecting popular opinions, enduring hardships, and resisting temptations. It may mean losing relationships, facing persecution, or standing alone in faith. But the reward is beyond comparison, eternal life with God.
Here are a few things you can do to help yourself pick the right gate.
Examine Your Path
Are you walking in step with Christ, or are you being drawn toward the broad road of compromise and worldly pleasures? Reflect on your daily choices.
Embrace the Cost
The narrow road requires surrender. What areas of your life are you hesitant to fully give to God? A career choice? A habit? A relationship? Trust that whatever you surrender, God replaces with something far greater.
Walk with Perseverance
The journey may be difficult, but you are not alone. Surround yourself with fellow believers who will encourage and challenge you to stay on course.
Live with the End in Mind
Remember, the wide road ends in destruction, but the narrow road leads to eternal life. Keep your eyes on Jesus, knowing that the sacrifices made now will be worth it in eternity.
Choose wisely today! The path you walk determines your eternal destination.
Heavenly Father, I come before You, recognizing the choice set before me. Help me to reject the fleeting pleasures of the broad road and choose the narrow path that leads to life. Give me strength when the journey is difficult, courage when I feel alone, and faith to trust in Your promises. Let my life reflect a commitment to You, that others may be encouraged to walk this path as well. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
