Pursuing Peace

“Turn from evil and do good; seek peace and pursue it.”
— Psalm 34:14 (NIV)
Today’s verse is a psalm of deliverance, written by David after God rescued him from a dire situation. In verse 14, David gives us a straightforward but profound instruction: Turn from evil and do good; seek peace and pursue it. These words call us not only to avoid sin but to actively engage in righteousness.
Turning from evil is more than just stopping sinful actions, it’s about a heart change, a reorientation of our lives toward God’s will. It’s easy to think of evil as something distant, something done by others. But if we’re honest, we each wrestle with attitudes, thoughts, and habits that pull us away from God’s best. It may be a spirit of bitterness, an unkind word, a self-serving decision, or a grudge we refuse to release. Turning from evil requires daily surrender and the power of the Holy Spirit to transform us from within.
Yet, David doesn’t stop there. He commands us not just to avoid evil but to do good. Faith isn’t passive, it’s active. As James 2:17 says, “Faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead.” Doing good means stepping in when someone is hurting, offering encouragement instead of criticism, choosing integrity when dishonesty would be easier, and loving those who are difficult to love.
Then comes the pursuit of peace. Peace isn’t just the absence of conflict; it is the presence of God’s wholeness in our lives and relationships. The Hebrew word for peace, shalom, carries a deep meaning, completeness, well-being, and harmony. David urges us to seek peace, meaning we must be intentional about fostering it. Whether in our marriages, workplaces, churches, or communities, we are called to be peacemakers.
Here are a few ways you apply this to your daily life.
Examine Your Heart
Are there areas where you need to turn away from sin? Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal anything that is hindering you from living righteously.
Actively Do Good
Look for an opportunity today to extend kindness, generosity, or encouragement to someone.
Pursue Peace
Is there a relationship in your life that needs mending? Take the first step in reconciliation, even if it requires humility.
May your day be filled with the peace of Christ as you walk in His righteousness!
Father, help me to turn from anything that is not of You. Give me the strength to do good, even when it is difficult. Fill my heart with Your peace, and make me a vessel of peace in my relationships. Let my life reflect Your goodness and love. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
