A Friend Who Loves at All Times
02/14/2025
“A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for a time of adversity.”
— Proverbs 17:17 (NIV)
True friendship is a rare and precious gift. In a world where relationships are often transactional, where people come and go based on convenience. Today’s verse, Proverbs 17:17 calls us to a higher standard of love and loyalty.
“A friend loves at all times.” Not just in good times, when laughter is easy and life is smooth, but also in the hard times, when the storms rage, and the weight of the world presses down. A true friend does not disappear when the path gets rough; they lean in, offering a steady presence, a listening ear, and a heart that understands.
“And a brother is born for a time of adversity.” The Hebrew word for “brother” here doesn’t necessarily mean a blood relative, but someone who stands with you as family, someone who sees your struggles and chooses to walk beside you. In adversity, superficial friendships fade, but those who remain are the ones who reflect God’s unwavering love.
This verse points us to Jesus, the greatest Friend we could ever have. He loves us at all times, through our joys and failures, in our faithfulness and our wanderings. He did not leave us in our sin but came to bear our burdens, to walk the road of suffering for our sake. His friendship is not conditional; it is sacrificial.
Think about the people in your life today. Are you the kind of friend who loves at all times? Do you show up when others are hurting, or only when it’s convenient? Ask God to help you be a friend who reflects His love, a friend who stays, who encourages, who prays, and who loves in all seasons.
Reach out to a friend today, not just to catch up, but to encourage them. Let them know you are there for them, not just in the good times, but always.
Father, thank You for the gift of true friendship. Help me to love others the way You love me—faithfully, sacrificially, and unconditionally. Give me eyes to see those who are struggling and the courage to stand with them in their adversity. And Lord, thank You for Jesus, the Friend who loves me at all times. Amen.
