The Beginning of Wisdom
01/30/2025
“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and instruction.”
- Proverbs 1:7 (NIV)
What does it mean to “fear the Lord”? This phrase is not about cowering in terror but about living in reverent awe of God. It is the deep recognition that He is holy, sovereign, and all-knowing, and that our lives are fully dependent on Him. When we understand who God is, His power, His justice, His mercy, and His love, it reshapes how we live.
The proverb tells us that this reverence is the beginning of knowledge. Wisdom does not start with human intellect, experience, or education; it starts with a heart that honors God above all. Without a proper view of God, we may accumulate information, but we will lack the wisdom to apply it rightly. True wisdom is not merely knowing what is right, but living according to God’s truth.
However, the verse also warns us: “Fools despise wisdom and instruction.” A fool is not someone who lacks intelligence but one who rejects God’s guidance. A fool insists on self-sufficiency, ignoring God’s commands and direction. The world often praises independence and self-made success, but the Bible reminds us that real understanding comes from surrendering to God’s authority.
Here are a few things you can do today and start applying this lesson to your life.
Ask yourself: Do I approach God with reverence, seeking His wisdom in my daily decisions?
Consider areas of life where you may be relying more on human reasoning than on God’s Word.
Spend time in prayer, asking the Lord for a teachable heart that desires His wisdom above all.
Read a passage of Scripture today with the mindset that it is God’s instruction for your life, not just words on a page.
May you walk in the wisdom of God today, knowing that true understanding begins with honoring Him.
Heavenly Father, I come before You in awe of who You are. Teach me to fear You in a way that leads to wisdom and understanding. Help me to trust in Your ways rather than relying on my own understanding. Give me a heart that seeks Your instruction and rejects foolishness. Guide my thoughts, my words, and my actions today so that they align with Your truth. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
