Crossing Over from Death to Life
9/5/2024
"Very truly I tell you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life and will not be judged but has crossed over from death to life."
-John 5:24 (NIV)
In John 5:24, Jesus gives us an incredible promise—a promise of life, not just in the future, but starting right now. He begins with "Very truly," emphasizing the certainty and importance of His message. He is declaring that anyone who hears His word and believes in God, who sent Him, will have eternal life. This isn't a possibility or a mere hope; it is a divine assurance. Think about it, Jesus is speaking about the power of belief and faith….in Him. He is telling us all about the importance of hearing His word and truly believing in Him and the Father who sent Him. This is how we receive the gift of eternal life and are freed from the judgment of sin and death.
To "hear" His word means more than just listening. It means receiving His message into our hearts, understanding it with our minds, and accepting it with faith. When we do this, a transformation occurs. We pass from spiritual death into spiritual life. Our sins are forgiven, and we are no longer under the judgment that leads to death. Instead, we are granted eternal life with God. Listen up, our salvation is not based on our own works or actions, but on our faith in Jesus Christ.
This verse also speaks of an amazing transition of crossing over from death to life. It is an immediate and irreversible action. The moment we place our faith in Jesus and accept Him as our Lord and Savior, our destiny is changed forever. The old is gone, and the new has come. We are no longer bound by the chains of sin and death but are set free to live in the fullness of God's love and grace.
Take a moment today to reflect on what it means to truly "hear" and "believe." Are there areas in your life where you need to trust God more deeply? Consider what it means to live with the assurance that you have already crossed over from death to life. Let this truth give you peace, knowing that your eternity is secure in Christ.
When we believe in Jesus, we don’t have to wait for eternal life—it begins the moment we trust in Him.
Heavenly Father, thank You for sending Jesus to save us and for the gift of eternal life. Help me to hear Your word with an open heart and to believe in Your promises with unwavering faith. May I live each day with the assurance that I have crossed over from death to life, and may this truth bring peace to my soul. In Jesus' name, Amen.
