You Are What You Think

"The mind governed by the flesh is death, but the mind governed by the Spirit is life and peace."
- Romans 8:6 NIV
In our daily lives, the battle for our minds is constant. The choices we make, the thoughts we entertain, and the beliefs we hold all shape the direction of our lives. Romans 8:6 presents a powerful contrast between two ways of thinking: one led by the flesh and one led by the Spirit.
Let’s break the verse down and look at a few parts of it.
The Mind Governed by the Flesh:
This refers to a mindset focused on worldly desires, self-centered ambitions, and temporary pleasures. This way of thinking leads to spiritual death—separation from God and a life devoid of true purpose and fulfillment. It is marked by anxiety, fear, and restlessness.
The Mind Governed by the Spirit:
In contrast, the "mind governed by the Spirit" is rooted in God’s truth and guidance. It brings life and peace. This mindset embraces the eternal perspective, aligning our thoughts with God’s will and allowing the Holy Spirit to influence our decisions and attitudes. It results in a life characterized by inner peace, joy, and a deep sense of purpose.
So how do we apply Romans 8:6 in our daily lives?
To experience the life and peace that come from a mind governed by the Spirit, we must intentionally cultivate our relationship with God. Here are three practical steps to help you align your thoughts with the Spirit:
1. Regularly Engage with Scripture:
God’s Word is the primary way He speaks to us. By reading and meditating on the Bible, we allow His truths to shape our thinking. Consider setting aside time each day to read Scripture and reflect on its meaning. Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal how the passage applies to your life.
2. Practice Prayer and Reflection:
Prayer is our direct line of communication with God. Through prayer, we can present our worries, seek guidance, and ask for the Holy Spirit’s help in transforming our minds. Take time each day to pray and listen for God’s voice. Reflect on your thoughts and actions, and ask God to reveal areas where you need to shift from a fleshly mindset to a Spirit-led one.
3. Surround Yourself with Godly Influences:
The people we spend time with and the content we consume can significantly impact our mindset. Surround yourself with fellow believers who encourage and challenge you in your faith. Listen to worship music, read Christian books, and seek out sermons and podcasts that point you towards God.
I encourage you to make a “Daily Declaration” similar to this:
"I choose to set my mind on the things of the Spirit. I reject the thoughts and desires of the flesh, and I embrace the life and peace that come from being governed by the Holy Spirit."
As you go through your day, remember the power of a Spirit-governed mind. Let the Holy Spirit guide your thoughts, and you will experience the abundant life and peace that only God can provide.
Heavenly Father, thank You for the promise of life and peace through Your Spirit. Help me to recognize when my thoughts are governed by the flesh and to shift my focus back to You. Transform my mind and guide my actions so that I may live in alignment with Your will. Fill me with Your peace and lead me in Your life-giving ways. Amen.
