Setting Our Minds on Things Above
4/23/2024
“Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth.” - Colossians 3:2 ESV
In this verse, Paul encourages believers to prioritize heavenly perspectives over earthly concerns. It’s a call to align our thoughts, desires, and ambitions with the eternal values of God’s kingdom rather than being consumed by the fleeting matters of this world. Face it, no matter how hard we try, It can be easy to get caught up in the worries and cares of this world, but Paul urges us to focus our thoughts on heavenly things.
Setting our minds on things above involves intentional focus and discipline. It means investing time in prayer, meditation on Scripture, and seeking the guidance of the Holy Spirit to discern God’s will.
Setting our minds on things above means prioritizing our relationship with God above all else. It means seeking His will and His kingdom above our own desires and ambitions. It means investing in eternal treasures rather than temporary pleasures. It requires a conscious decision to turn away from the distractions and temptations that vie for our attention and instead fix our gaze on Jesus Christ, the author, and perfecter of our faith.
When we set our minds on things above, we are reminded of our true identity as children of God. We are reminded of the hope and the future that we have in Christ. We are reminded that this world is not our home, and our ultimate destination is with our Heavenly Father.
When we prioritize heavenly things, we gain a new perspective on life. We begin to see the world through God’s eyes, recognizing the eternal significance of our actions and choices. Our priorities shift from self-centered pursuits to kingdom-centered endeavors, as we seek to glorify God in all that we do.
Setting our minds on things above also provides a source of hope and comfort in the midst of trials and difficulties. When we face challenges, we can take refuge in the knowledge that our ultimate citizenship is in heaven, where there will be no more pain or sorrow. This perspective enables us to endure hardship with patience and faith, knowing that our present sufferings are temporary compared to the eternal glory that awaits us.
Let us always make a conscious effort to set our minds on things above each day. Let us spend time in prayer and in His Word, seeking His guidance and His wisdom. Let us pursue righteousness, love, and faithfulness, knowing that these are the things that truly matter in the eyes of God.
May we be diligent in pursuing a deeper relationship with God and seeking His kingdom above all else. As we do so, may we experience the peace, joy, and fulfillment that come from living in alignment with His will.
May we be intentional in fixing our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, and may we find joy and peace in knowing that our treasure is in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. Let us set our minds on things above, and let that be the driving force behind everything we do.
