Do you see what I see?

"But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks intently at his natural face in a mirror. For he looks at himself and goes away and at once forgets what he was like."
- James 1:22-24
Have you ever looked in the mirror and noticed something out of place, like a smudge on your face or messy hair? What do you do when that happens? You don't just keep staring at yourself in the mirror, right? No! You take action to fix it. You reach for a tissue or comb and make yourself presentable.
In the same way, James is urging us to not just be hearers of the Word but doers as well. It's not enough to hear God's Word and think, "That's nice," but then go about our lives without applying it. That would be deceiving ourselves. Instead, we should be actively living out the truths we learn from Scripture.
Imagine if we only heard about God's love, forgiveness, and grace but never experienced it or extended it to others. We'd be like that person who looks in the mirror, sees the smudge, but does nothing about it. We'd quickly forget what we're truly called to be – reflections of God's character and love.
God's Word is meant to transform us, to shape our thoughts, attitudes, and actions. It's meant to guide us in making decisions, treating others with kindness and compassion, and living a life that honors Him. When we neglect to put God's Word into action, we miss out on the abundant life He has for us.
Let's take a moment to reflect on our own lives. Are we merely hearers of the Word? Do we consume Scripture without allowing it to impact our hearts, minds, and actions? Or are we actively applying what we learn, seeking to live out God's truth?
God desires for us to not only know His Word intellectually but also to internalize it and put it into practice. When we do that, we become more like Jesus, and the world around us begins to see His love and grace through us. Let's commit ourselves to be doers of the Word, not just hearers, and watch as God transforms our lives and impacts the lives of those around us.
