The Posture of True Greatness
07/31/2025
“Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves.”
— Philippians 2:3 (NIV)
Here on earth, we are often encouraged to put ourselves first. From social media highlights to workplace competition, the culture of self-promotion surrounds us. But Paul’s letter to the Philippians cuts through this noise with a radically different message: True greatness is not found in lifting ourselves up, but in bowing low with humility.
This verse calls us to examine the motivations behind our actions. Are we serving others to be noticed or applauded? Are we helping only when it benefits us in return? Paul says, “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit.” That’s a tall order. It’s not just some things, it’s NO THINGS. Nothing at all. No hidden agenda. No quiet comparisons. No climbing the ladder on the backs of others.
Instead, we are to “value others above ourselves.” This doesn’t mean thinking less of ourselves, but thinking of ourselves less. Consider the life of Jesus, God in the flesh, who humbled Himself to wash the feet of His disciples. He didn’t consider His status something to cling to. He laid it down for the good of others. That’s the posture we’re invited to take.
Think of someone like Mother Teresa, who spent her life caring for the poorest of the poor in Calcutta. She didn’t build a platform. She built trust. She didn’t promote her name. She carried the name of Christ in quiet service. Her greatness came not from self-importance, but self-forgetfulness.
In our daily lives, this humility might look like letting someone else have the last word. It might mean stepping back so a colleague can shine. It could be choosing to listen more than speak, or forgiving even when you’re right. These moments don’t often make headlines, but in the Kingdom of God, they matter deeply.
Here are some things to help on your journey.
Pause before speaking and ask, “Is this for me or for others?”
Look for someone to encourage without needing any recognition.
Let someone go first, in line, in conversation, or in opportunity.
Pray for a heart of humility and eyes to see others as God sees them.
My challenge for you is this:
Find one way to intentionally elevate someone else above yourself, whether at home, work, or in your community. Ask God to show you where pride may be hiding and replace it with His grace-filled humility.
Lord Jesus, You showed us what true humility looks like. You came not to be served, but to serve. Forgive me for the times I’ve acted out of selfish ambition or pride. Teach me to value others the way You do. Give me a heart that chooses humility, even when it’s hard. May my life reflect Your love through quiet, selfless acts of grace. In Your name I pray, amen.
