Honoring Those Who Serve
9/10/2024
"Now we ask you, brothers and sisters, to acknowledge those who work hard among you, who care for you in the Lord and who admonish you. Hold them in the highest regard in love because of their work. Live in peace with each other."
— 1 Thessalonians 5:12-13 (NIV)
In this passage, Paul encourages the Thessalonian believers to honor and respect those who labor among them in the Lord—those who work tirelessly in ministry, offering guidance, teaching, and correction. Paul understood the importance of recognizing and valuing the efforts of those who serve God’s people. This principle remains vital in our churches and communities today.
Imagine a pastor who spends hours preparing sermons, counseling members, visiting the sick, and praying for the congregation. Or think about the worship leader who diligently chooses songs that draw people into the presence of God, practicing and rehearsing each week. Consider the children’s ministry leader who lovingly prepares lessons and activities to help young hearts know and love Jesus. These individuals are often seen but rarely fully acknowledged for the countless hours they invest behind the scenes.
Honoring those who serve isn’t just about words of praise; it’s about tangible actions that demonstrate our appreciation. For instance, sending a thoughtful note, offering to help with a task, or praying specifically for their needs are ways we can acknowledge their work. A small gesture, like bringing a meal or providing a day of rest, can speak volumes to someone weary from constant service.
So what are some practical ways you could do this? Here are three ideas.
Acknowledge Their Work
Take time today to consider the people who serve you within your church or community. Who are the leaders, teachers, and volunteers who invest their time, energy, and love? Acknowledge their contributions by expressing your gratitude through a heartfelt note, a word of encouragement, or a simple thank you.
Hold Them in High Regard
Understand that those who serve are not just filling roles; they are carrying out the work of the Lord. When we hold them in high regard, we demonstrate our love and respect for their dedication to God’s kingdom. This might mean defending them in conversations, offering constructive feedback with kindness, or giving them grace when they fall short.
Promote Peace
One of the best ways to honor those who lead is to foster peace within the community. Avoid gossip, refuse to entertain complaints without solutions, and commit to unity. When we live in peace with one another, we create an environment where leaders and servants can thrive without unnecessary burdens.
These are just a few ways that you can you show honor to those who serve you today. What can you think of on your own? Consider taking a moment to express your appreciation in a tangible way.
Heavenly Father, thank You for those You have placed in leadership and service roles in our lives. Help us to acknowledge their hard work and honor them with our words and actions. Teach us to hold them in love and to live in peace with each other. May our communities reflect Your grace and unity, showing the world what it means to follow You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
