Embracing the Name of Christ

"However, if you suffer as a Christian, do not be ashamed, but praise God that you bear that name."
- 1 Peter 4:16 (NIV)
As Christians, we are not immune to suffering. In fact, Jesus himself told us that in this world we will face trials and tribulations. Yet, even in the midst of our suffering, we are called to remain steadfast in our faith and to continue to praise God.
In our journey of faith, there are times when living as a follower of Christ brings challenges. The early Christians, to whom Peter wrote, understood this well. They faced persecution, ridicule, and suffering simply because they identified with Jesus. Peter's words to them were not to shy away from the difficulties but to embrace them, knowing that suffering for Christ's sake is an honor, not a shame.
It can be easy to feel ashamed or discouraged when we face hardships because of our faith. We may question why God would allow us to go through such difficulties. But Peter reminds us that suffering as a Christian is not something to be ashamed of. Instead, it is an opportunity for us to bring glory to God.
Today, we might not face the same physical persecution as the early church, but the pressure to conform to worldly standards is real. Whether it’s in our workplace, social circles, or even within our own families, living out our faith can sometimes bring isolation or criticism. The temptation to hide our Christian identity to avoid discomfort is strong.
But Peter’s encouragement to us is clear: don’t be ashamed of being a Christian. In fact, we are called to praise God that we bear the name of Christ. This name, “Christian,” means that we belong to Him, that we are part of His family, and that we are living witnesses to His love and grace in the world.
When you encounter situations where your faith is tested, remember that you are not alone. The Holy Spirit is with you, giving you strength and courage to stand firm. Use these moments as opportunities to reflect the character of Christ in your responses—whether it’s showing kindness in the face of hostility or holding on to integrity when others compromise.
When we endure suffering with grace and faith, we bear witness to the power of God in our lives. Our response to hardship can be a testimony to others of the hope and strength that we have in Christ. So let us not be ashamed of our faith, but instead, let us praise God in the midst of our suffering, knowing that he is with us every step of the way.
Today, let your identity as a Christian be a source of joy and strength. Praise God for the privilege of bearing the name of Christ. Let His light shine through you, even when it’s difficult, trusting that He is working through your life to make a difference in the world. I encourage you to reflect on any suffering you may be facing and to turn to God in prayer. Ask him to give you the strength and courage to endure, and to help you see the purpose and meaning behind your trials. And remember, you bear the name of Christ - a name that is worthy of praise and honor.
Lord, thank You for the privilege of bearing Your name. Give me the courage to stand firm in my faith, even when it’s challenging. Help me to be a witness of Your love and grace, and may I always praise You in the midst of trials. Strengthen me to live boldly for You, unashamed and full of joy, knowing that I belong to You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
