Cast It and Leave It

“Cast your cares on the Lord and he will sustain you; he will never let the righteous be shaken.” — Psalm 55:22 (NIV)
There’s something beautiful about the word “cast.” It’s not a gentle laying down or a cautious placing, it’s a throwing, a hurling, a letting go with force. And that’s exactly the picture David paints in today’s verse. He doesn’t tell us to carry our burdens delicately into God’s presence. He says, cast them. Get rid of them. Launch them into the arms of the only One strong enough to bear them.
David knew a thing or two about burdens. He wrote this psalm in the middle of betrayal, likely from someone he once trusted deeply. The pain was personal. The wounds were fresh. And yet, in the chaos of his emotions, he points to this truth: God doesn’t just help us carry our burdens; He sustains us. That word in Hebrew means to nourish, support, to hold up.
When I think of that, I imagine a weary traveler in a storm, soaked and exhausted, stumbling forward under a heavy backpack. And then a hand, strong and steady, lifts the weight off their shoulders and offers shelter. That’s God. He doesn’t just relieve the pressure. He walks with us through the storm. And when we feel like we’re falling apart, He steadies us so we won’t be “shaken.”
But the key is this: we have to cast the burden. We can’t keep picking it back up. We can’t toss it to God and then snatch it out of His hands the moment we feel anxious again. That’s not trust, that’s control. And control never sustains; it only drains.
Corrie ten Boom once said, “Worry does not empty tomorrow of its sorrow, it empties today of its strength.” Casting our cares is not denial. It’s surrender. It’s admitting that we can’t, but He can.
Here are some things to help you on your journey.
Take a few minutes to write down the things that are weighing heavily on your heart right now. Name them.
In prayer, go through the list and verbally cast each one to the Lord. Speak it out loud if possible.
Put the list away, not to forget, but to remind yourself they’ve been handed over.
Check in with yourself throughout the day. If the burden creeps back, repeat the process.
My challenge for you is this:
Whenever anxiety rises today, don’t wrestle with it, release it. Whisper, “Lord, I cast this care on You,” and trust that He is sustaining you right now.
Father, thank You for being a God who not only hears but holds. Today, I cast my cares on You. The ones I’ve spoken aloud and the ones I haven’t even named. I release them because I believe You are strong enough to carry them and gentle enough to carry me. Help me not to take them back, but to walk in the peace that comes from trusting You completely. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
