Taste and See

“Taste and see that the Lord is good; blessed is the one who takes refuge in him.”
— Psalm 34:8 (NIV)
David wrote these words not from a palace of peace but from a cave of hiding. He had fled from Saul, pretended to be insane before Abimelek, and was now hiding in the cave of Adullam. Yet in the middle of fear and uncertainty, David calls us to do something deeply personal and life-changing: “Taste and see that the Lord is good.”
This is not a theological suggestion, it’s an invitation to experience God. It’s one thing to know about God’s goodness in theory; it’s another to taste it for yourself. Imagine standing in a kitchen filled with the aroma of freshly baked bread. Someone tells you it’s delicious. That’s nice to hear. But then they hand you a warm slice, soft, buttery, perfectly seasoned. Now, it’s not just information. It’s experience. David says, “Don’t just believe God is good. Try Him. Trust Him. See for yourself.”
And for those who do? David declares they are blessed. Why? Because they’ve learned to take refuge in God. They’ve found shelter not in their own strength or in worldly security, but in the faithfulness of the Lord. That kind of trust isn’t passive. It means leaning into God when life is uncertain, just like David did in that cave.
Maybe you’re in your own “cave” season right now. A season of anxiety, transition, or confusion. This verse reminds us that even there, the goodness of God can be tasted and seen. And once you’ve tasted His grace, His peace, His presence, nothing else satisfies.
Here are some things you can do to help you on your journey.
Reflect: Think back on moments in your life where God’s goodness showed up. Write one down today.
Pray: Ask God to help you taste and see more of Him—not just know about Him.
Share: Encourage someone today with a story of how God’s goodness has impacted you.
Trust: Take refuge in Him today with one specific area you’re tempted to control.
My challenge for you is this:
Where in your life are you relying on your own understanding instead of tasting and trusting the Lord? Take a step today, even a small one, to let Him show you His goodness in that very place.
Father, thank You for Your unshakable goodness. Help me not just to hear about You, but to experience You deeply. Open my eyes to see the blessings of taking refuge in You. Let me taste Your peace in my chaos, Your presence in my loneliness, and Your strength in my weakness. I trust You today. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
