Overflowing Promises

“You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. Surely your goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.”
— Psalm 23:5–6 (NIV)
King David’s words in today’s verse move from the peaceful pasture to a royal banquet table. And what a shift it is. He’s no longer lying beside still waters; he’s sitting at a table prepared by God Himself, right in front of his enemies. Not in hiding. Not in fear. But in confidence, seated and honored.
Imagine this scene: God, the King of all kings, sets a table just for you. The enemy, be it fear, discouragement, betrayal, or spiritual opposition—has to watch as you are not only protected but celebrated. You’re not merely surviving; you’re thriving. God doesn’t remove you from the storm right away, but He shows up right in the middle of it, and throws a feast.
David continues: “You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.” In ancient tradition, the anointing of oil was a sign of blessing, calling, and refreshment. Shepherds would anoint their sheep’s heads with oil to protect them from insects and to heal wounds. Here, it represents God’s intentional care, healing, and favor over your life.
And then David declares something remarkable: “Surely your goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life…” That word “follow” in Hebrew is better understood as pursue. God’s goodness doesn’t just tag along behind you, it chases you down. His mercy doesn’t run out when you do; it picks you up and pushes you forward. And best of all, this isn’t a short-term blessing, it’s an eternal promise: “I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.”
This is a Psalm for anyone who has ever felt surrounded. For anyone who has ever faced a table of difficulty, God prepares a better one. One of grace. One of peace. One where your cup isn’t just filled, it overflows.
Here are some things you can do to help you on your journey.
Set aside time today to reflect on the “banquet table” God has prepared in your life, even in hard seasons.
List three ways you’ve seen God’s goodness and love pursue you recently.
Encourage someone going through a difficult time by reminding them that God is with them, even in the presence of enemies.
My challenge for you is this:
Take a moment today to pray at your table, your actual kitchen table, and invite the Lord to sit with you there. Thank Him for preparing a place for you, even in the presence of challenges. And commit to living with the assurance that His goodness and love are not just past memories, but present realities and future promises.
Father, thank You for preparing a table for me, even when life feels like a battlefield. Thank You for anointing me with Your presence, healing me with Your oil, and overflowing my life with blessing. Help me to see the ways Your goodness is pursuing me today. May I never forget that I am not just invited, I am chosen to dwell in Your presence forever. In Jesus’ name, amen.
