The Least of These

05/25/2025

“The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’”
—Matthew 25:40 (NIV)

This verse comes at the end of a powerful teaching by Jesus, where He separates the sheep from the goats, the righteous from the unrighteous, based on how they treated others. And not just any others, but the least: the hungry, the stranger, the sick, the prisoner. Those often forgotten by society… yet never forgotten by God.

Imagine Jesus walking among us today, not in royal robes or with a halo over His head, but disguised as a weary traveler on the roadside, or a young mother at the grocery store trying to choose between diapers and dinner. What if the kindness we show to those people, those the world overlooks, is actually kindness offered directly to Jesus Himself?

Years ago, a young man named Chris started volunteering at a homeless shelter, unsure of how much good he could do. One day, an older gentleman approached him and said, “I see Jesus in you.” Chris smiled, but the man gently added, “But more importantly, I hope you see Jesus in me.” That moment transformed Chris’s understanding of service, it’s not just doing for others, it’s seeing Christ in others.

Matthew 25:40 reminds us that our faith isn’t measured just by church attendance, Bible knowledge, or prayer, but by love in action. Jesus doesn’t just identify with the hurting and broken, He inhabits them. When we serve them, we are actually serving Him.

Here are a few things you can do to help you on your journey.

Identify “the least” in your world. Who is struggling, isolated, or overlooked in your life or community?

Perform one intentional act of kindness this week, bring a meal, make a call, offer a ride, lend an ear.

Journal or pray about how you view others. Ask God to help you see with Jesus’ eyes.

Look into someone’s eyes today, the kind of person others walk past, and choose to see Jesus there. Let your response reflect how you would treat your Savior.

Jesus, help me not to pass by those You love. Open my eyes to see You in every face, especially those who are hurting or ignored. Let my heart reflect Your compassion and my hands extend Your grace. May I never forget that what I do for them, I do for You. Amen.
