The Kingdom Transfer

“Therefore I tell you that the kingdom of God will be taken away from you and given to a people who will produce its fruit.”— Matthew 21:43 (NIV)
These words of Jesus come at the end of the Parable of the Tenants. A pointed story directed at the religious leaders of His day. The parable tells of a landowner (God) who rents his vineyard to tenants (The religious leaders). When the landowner sends servants (the prophets) to collect his fruit, they are beaten and killed. Finally, he sends his son (Jesus), who is also rejected and killed. The judgment is severe: the vineyard, symbolizing the kingdom of God, is taken away and entrusted to others, which is us.
Jesus was delivering a shocking truth: privilege without faithfulness results in loss. The Jewish leaders had been entrusted with the Word of God, the temple, the covenant. But their failure to recognize and honor the Son of God meant they would no longer be stewards of God’s kingdom work.
But don’t miss this—the kingdom wasn’t destroyed; it was transferred. It was given to a people who would produce its fruit. That includes us. Those of us who believe, follow, and bear fruit in keeping with repentance.
This verse is both a sobering warning and an exciting invitation. God is looking for fruitful people, not just those who look the part, but those who actually live the part. He seeks hearts that are yielded, lives that are surrendered, and hands that are willing.
Imagine a vineyard again. If a vine doesn’t bear grapes, what good is it? You don’t plant vines for shade or decoration, you plant them for fruit. The same is true for our lives in Christ. He saved us not just to believe but to be fruitful: to love others, to serve with humility, to share the gospel, to live with holiness.
I once heard a story about a church that proudly displayed its century-old building and traditions. But inside, it was spiritually cold. No outreach. No joy. No transformation. The church looked alive, but it bore no fruit. Within a few years, it closed its doors. But just down the road, a new church opened in a strip mall, a humble space, filled with new believers hungry for God, serving their community. That is Matthew 21:43 in action.
Here are a few ways you can experience the Kingdom today.
Self-Check
Ask yourself, What kind of fruit am I producing for God’s Kingdom?
Pray for Awareness
Invite the Holy Spirit to reveal any areas where you’re resisting surrender.
Do One Fruitful Thing Today
Call someone who needs encouragement, share your faith story, serve someone in need, or pray with someone.
Live today like a steward of the Kingdom. Bear fruit that reflects the character and love of Jesus. Don’t settle for looking faithful, be faithful.
Father, thank You for inviting me into Your Kingdom. Help me to never take that for granted. I don’t want to just talk about You, I want my life to reflect You. Teach me to be fruitful in every season, obedient in every moment, and surrendered in every decision. Let Your Kingdom come and Your will be done in me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
