The Right to Become Children of God
04/29/2026
There’s something deep within every person, a longing to belong, to be known, to be accepted not for what we do, but for who we are. We search for identity in accomplishments, relationships, and status, yet none of those truly satisfy. Into that longing, this verse speaks a powerful truth about who we can become.
“Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God.” — John 1:12
What an incredible invitation. Not earned. Not achieved. Not based on performance. It simply says receive and believe. That’s it.
I remember watching a family finalize an adoption once. The child didn’t do anything to earn that moment. There were no qualifications he had to meet, no tests to pass. He simply stepped into the reality that someone had chosen him, loved him, and called him their own. In that instant, everything changed, his name, his home, his future, his identity.
That’s the picture John is painting here.
When we receive Jesus and believe in His name, God doesn’t just forgive us, He adopts us. We are no longer outsiders trying to prove ourselves. We are sons and daughters with full rights in His family. That means access to Him, intimacy with Him, and security in Him.
So many people live like spiritual orphans, striving to earn approval, constantly wondering if they’re enough. But this verse settles it: if you have received Him, you are His. You don’t fight for identity, you live from it.
And here’s the rub we feel, we may be declared children of God, but we don’t always live like it. We still carry old mindsets, old fears, and old labels. But every day is an opportunity to step more fully into who we already are in Christ.
Action Steps
* Take a moment today and thank God specifically for adopting you into His family.
* Identify one area where you’ve been striving for approval and surrender it to Him.
* Speak this truth out loud: “I am a child of God. I belong to Him.”
* Spend a few minutes in prayer simply enjoying His presence as your Father, not as someone trying to earn His attention.
Challenge for Today
Live today as someone who is already fully accepted. Walk into every conversation, decision, and challenge with the confidence that you are a child of God, not trying to become one.
Prayer
Father, thank You for the incredible gift of being called Your child. Help me to not just understand this truth, but to live it. Break off any mindset that tells me I have to earn Your love. Remind me today that I belong to You, that I am chosen, and that my identity is secure in Christ. Teach me to walk with confidence, peace, and purpose as Your son/daughter. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
