What We See Is Not All There Is

“So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.”
— 2 Corinthians 4:18 (NIV)
Life has a way of pulling our attention toward what is right in front of us. Bills to pay. News headlines. Health reports. Struggles in relationships. Deadlines. Responsibilities. The visible things often feel urgent and heavy.
Paul understood that tension. When he wrote these words to the Corinthians, his own life was far from comfortable. He faced persecution, hardship, and uncertainty. If anyone had reason to focus on what was right in front of him, it was Paul. Yet he intentionally shifted his gaze.
“We fix our eyes not on what is seen…”
Fixing our eyes isn’t passive; it’s deliberate, it takes effort. It means choosing where our attention rests. We must be willing participants.
I remember when we built our house. The framer was about three-days in and Caryn and I walked through. If you’ve ever done this you know in the early stages it doesn’t look like much, just boards, nails, and open spaces. To someone passing by, it might seem unfinished or even chaotic. But the framer isn’t discouraged, because he’s not focused on the current appearance. He sees the completed home. He sees the rooms, he saw us, the family that will live there and the life that would unfold inside those walls.
Perspective changes everything.
Paul reminds us that much of what consumes our attention today is temporary. Circumstances change. Problems come and go. Seasons shift. What feels overwhelming today may be a distant memory tomorrow.
But the unseen things, God’s presence, His promises, the work He is doing in our hearts, the eternal impact of faith…..those things last forever.
Faith, in many ways, is learning to focus on the eternal while living in the temporary.
It means trusting that God is working even when we can’t see it yet. It means believing that what He is building in our lives is bigger than the moment we’re standing in right now.
When we fix our eyes on the unseen, worry begins to loosen its grip, and hope begins to rise.
Action Steps:
• Start your day by focusing on one promise from God’s Word before focusing on your circumstances.
• When something stressful appears today, pause and ask, “Will this matter in eternity?”
• Spend a few quiet moments thanking God for what He is doing even when you cannot see it yet.
Today’s Challenge:
When something tries to steal your attention today, gently shift your focus back to God’s eternal promises instead of temporary pressures.
Prayer
Lord, so many things compete for my attention each day. Help me not to be consumed by what is temporary. Teach me to fix my eyes on what is eternal—Your presence, Your promises, and the work You are doing in my life. Strengthen my faith to trust You even when I cannot see the whole picture. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
