The King Who Came to Serve

03/31/2026

There’s something in all of us that gravitates toward recognition. We like to be appreciated, noticed, maybe even elevated a little. And if we’re honest, sometimes we measure success by how many people are serving us rather than how many people we are serving.

But Jesus flips that entire mindset upside down.

“Just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”
- Matthew 20:28 (NIV)

In this moment, the disciples were wrestling with position, who would be greatest, who would sit closest to Jesus, who would have influence. It wasn’t that they didn’t love Him; they just didn’t yet understand Him. And Jesus responds with one of the most powerful identity statements in all of Scripture:

“I did not come to be served… but to serve.”

Think about that.

The King of Kings.
The One with all authority.
The One who spoke creation into existence.

And yet, He chose the towel over the throne.

I remember a season when I was juggling a lot, ministry responsibilities, leadership decisions, people needing guidance, things pulling from every direction. There was a subtle shift happening in my heart. I wasn’t saying it out loud, but internally I began to feel like, “I’ve done a lot… I deserve a little margin… maybe others should step up more.”

And in a quiet moment, the Lord gently pressed this truth into me: You’re not called to be served, you’re called to serve.

It wasn’t a rebuke filled with shame, it was a realignment filled with purpose.

Because serving isn’t a downgrade in the Kingdom, it’s the pathway to it.

Jesus didn’t just serve with His actions, He served with His life. “To give His life as a ransom for many.” That means His service wasn’t convenient… it was costly. It led Him to the cross.

And that’s where this hits home for us.

Serving like Jesus isn’t about doing what’s easy. It’s about doing what reflects Him.

It’s choosing patience when you’re tired.

It’s choosing kindness when it’s not returned.

It’s showing up when no one else sees.

It’s giving when it costs you something.

Because every act of service becomes a reflection of the Savior.

And here’s the beauty: when we live this way, we don’t lose, we become more like Him.

Action Steps
• Ask God this morning: “Where can I serve today without expecting anything in return?”
• Look for one opportunity to meet someone’s need quietly and intentionally.
• Shift your mindset from “What do I deserve?” to “Who can I bless?”
• Remember that small acts of service carry eternal impact.

Challenge for the Day
Choose one act of service today that no one else may ever know about, and do it purely to reflect Jesus.

Prayer
Lord, thank You for showing me what true greatness looks like. You didn’t come to be served, but to serve, and You gave everything for me. Help me to carry that same heart today. Remove any pride or entitlement in me and replace it with humility and willingness. Open my eyes to the needs around me and give me the courage to serve, even when it costs me something. Let my life reflect You in every way. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
