Delight Yourself in the Lord

“Take delight in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart.”
— Psalm 37:4 (NIV)
I don’t know how you see it, but to me, there is a big difference between using God and delighting in God.
King David wrote this Psalm later in life. He had seen battlefields and betrayals. He had lived in caves and palaces. He had experienced seasons where the wicked seemed to prosper and the faithful seemed forgotten. And yet, looking back over his life, he gives this simple but profound invitation: “Take delight in the Lord.”
He does not say tolerate the Lord or visit the Lord occasionally, when you feel like it. He doesn’t advocate we run to Him only in crisis. He chooses the word delight. Delight in Him.
The word delight means to find joy in, to treasure, to take pleasure in. It’s the picture of someone savoring something that is deeply satisfying. Like sitting on your back porch in the quiet of the Texas Hill Country as the sun rises, coffee in hand, no rush, just presence. That kind of slow, intentional enjoyment.
David is not offering a transaction with God, “Do this and God will give you stuff.” He is describing transformation. When you truly delight in the Lord, your heart begins to align with His heart. Your desires begin to shift. What you once chased loses its shine. What once seemed optional, like spending time in His Word, prayer, and obedience, all change and become the place of your deepest joy.
I remember a time when everything externally was moving forward for me, opportunities, influence, momentum. But internally, I sensed the Lord gently asking, “Jeff, do you delight in what I give you, or do you delight in Me?” Let me say that question recalibrated my soul. I realized I found joy in stuff and not the time I spent with Him. I couldn’t have repented and returned to Him any faster.
When we delight in Him, something beautiful happens. Our desires are no longer driven by ego, fear, or comparison. They are shaped by His Spirit. And when our desires are shaped by Him, we begin to see Him fulfill them in ways we never could have orchestrated ourselves.
Please hear me, this is not about getting what you want. It’s about wanting what He wants and discovering that His will is far better than anything we could design.
Action Steps:
1. Start your day with gratitude before requests. Thank Him for who He is, not just what He does.
2. Spend unhurried time in His Word. Don’t rush it. Sit with it.
3. Ask Him to reshape your desires. Pray, “Lord, make me want what You want.”
Today’s Challenge:
Before you ask God for anything, simply sit with Him for five minutes and tell Him why you love Him.
Prayer:
Father, I confess that sometimes I delight more in Your blessings than in Your presence. Reorder my heart. Teach me to treasure You above success, comfort, or recognition. Shape my desires until they reflect Yours. I want to delight in You, not just depend on You. In Jesus’ name, amen.
